Recreate Responsibly on the SHT This Fall

As the first signs of fall begin to emerge on the Superior Hiking Trail, we can’t help but share our excitement for (arguably) the finest season to enjoy our favorite footpath.

We know -- it’s still summer for a few more weeks! -- but the cool, mostly bug-free days that lie just ahead will set the stage for everyone who sets foot on the SHT to soak in the majesty of fall in the northwoods.

Like many outdoor recreation destinations, the SHT has been host to unprecedented use and enjoyment this summer. It’s no surprise: spending time in the outdoors is among the safest activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the SHT offers unparalleled access to incredible nature spaces.

With that in mind, we've offered a few tips to help ensure you and everyone else feels safe and welcomed on the SHT throughout the fall color season.

Calling All Aspiring SHT Thru-hikers: Tune In For Helpful Tips
Planning a long-distance trip on the SHT this fall or next year? Tune in to How to Thru-Hike the SHT: A Webinar and Q&A with Annie Nelson on Sunday, September 13th, 2020 at 3pm (CST) via Zoom.

Annie, an experienced backpacker and SHT thru-hiker, will share practical tips for planning and enjoying long-distance hikes on the SHT. Aspiring thru-hikers of all levels of experience and ability are encouraged to register and participate in this free virtual event. Learn more about the event and sign up here
'Rock and A Hard Place' Training Results in Resilient Staircases

With new pandemic safety protocols in place for SHTA volunteer events, we've continued to host small-group skill building workshops for our trail crews.

In early August, the spur trail to Britton Peak was the classroom for a stonework training for a small group of SHTA staff, volunteers, and partners from the Superior National Forest. Over the course of five days, instructor Willie Bittner of Great Lakes Trailbuilders led a hands-on training on how to shape, cut, move, and set stones.

Our crews put these new skills to work by constructing three new staircases built to last for decades. See photos from the workshop here; the result is a more resilient and enjoyable path to the exceptional peak! (

2020 Summit Challenge: A Chance to Explore New Places
Have you started the SHT Summit Challenge yet? Vistas like Hunter's Rock are sure to delight and reward!

If you're wondering where to go or looking for a new section to check out, the SHT Summit Challenge is aimed at helping you explore a few lesser known, but equally rewarding destinations on the SHT. Here are the simple rules:

  1. Hike, run, walk, or saunter to at least seven of the summits listed on the Summit Challenge page by October 31, 2020.
  2. Snap a photo of the peak or vista and share it through your social media page with the hashtag #SHTSummitChallenge. (If you prefer to not share, don’t sweat this step — but we encourage you to take a photo for your own memories!)
  3. When you’re done, complete a short survey to share more about your experiences on the Trail.

Every participant who completes the challenge will receive a 2020 Summit Challenge button as a memento of your time on the Trail. Enjoy the views responsibly!
