Career Pathways Charter School Monthly News August 2020

New Virtual Career Explorations

We are excited to announce that students will have access to a new online learning opportunity. The Virtual Job Shadow website https://virtualjobshadow.com/ allows students to do college and career exploration as well as job searches. Students can save careers and schools of interest so they can more easily find the one that is just right for them. Other parts of the website help students plan short and long term goals. Teachers will work closely with students and guide them with the process.

Our annual Ice Cream Social was a huge success!
Over 60 people attended and socially distanced in the parking lot.  We gathered under tents, especially when it rained.  The rainbow in the picture was a nice way to start the new school year.  Thank you to everyone who joined us.

LEARNING MODEL:  Distance Learning with Supports

"The need to stay healthy and alive is our main focus."  ~ Parent and Student

The teachers have been planning lessons all summer and are ready for a strong start to the school year.  Distance learning requires careful planning and considerations.

First, students need to have the technology at home to be connected.  Then, the teachers need to be careful to give clear, easy to follow instructions that do not overwhelm students with extended screen time.  Considerations for communication, turning in completed work, and testing are all carefully thought through.

Using parent, student, and teacher feedback, we created a schedule for distance learning that is clear and easy to follow.

Please follow this link to see our Distance Learning Schedules posted on the school website.

Schedule Highlights:
  • By 8:30 each day, Lessons for the day will be posted to Google Classroom. (Contact your advisor for links.)
  • We will be following a 5 day schedule with Wednesdays for electives, advisory and meetings online with teachers.
  • For Middle School, a typical day will include 3-4 hours work time; 2-3 hours online and 1-2 hours not online; 4 core classes plus electives.
  • For High School, a typical day will include 4-4.5 hours work time; 3-4 hours online and 1-2 hours not online; 4 core classes plus electives.
  • Students are marked present when they attend Zoom classes. Advisory and Core Classes are via Zoom.

“Is it really going to be safe?   Wearing a mask all day isn't going to be comfortable.” ~ Parent

MEET FOUNDATIONAL NEEDS FIRST

To ensure that our students are ready to learn and our teachers ready to teach,  we are focusing on Meeting Foundational Needs First.

This month and into September, Advisors are meeting with families to make sure students have what they need.  We have received donations from several community organizations and friends to ensure that every Career Pathways student is starting the year with a chromebook, backpack, school supplies, and face masks.  Career Pathways’ Nutrition Program will have bundled breakfast, lunch, and milk available to all students on Mondays.  Families can sign up here https://forms.gle/GjSQ1zpoi3MnohSc7

Our school social worker, Ms. Alex Holzschuh is available to help students and families with other needs.  Please contact her with questions. She will get right back to you. (612) 540-0782 and alex@cpathmn.org

TRANSPORTATION

With MPS and SPPS starting in Distance Learning our transportation options became limited.  Career Pathways school board approved the purchase of a school van that can carry 6 students with social distancing.

The van will be used when other transportation options are not available or for in person jobsite and college visits.

TEACHER LEADERSHIP

Management of Career Pathways is handled through teacher-led committees supported by the administrative team.  Teacher-led committees manage operational and learning program duties.

While Career Pathways has an identified Executive Director, we have a teacher majority board, with teachers taking on leadership roles with school operations. One of the school’s contract purposes is to “create new professional opportunities for teachers, including the opportunity to be responsible for the learning program at the school site”.

The current administration and leadership looks closely at data (surveys, performance) informing any changes or adjustments the school should make to better serve their student population. Please let us know if you would like to get involved and join one of our committees.  Please contact Ms. Liz Lonetti to get involved.  (612) 540-0784 and llonetti@cpathmn.org
