"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,
and I will give you rest.
”  Matthew 11: 28

It’s Labor Day Weekend, like there’s never been a Labor Day weekend before…because, 2020! On Labor Day, we celebrate the American workforce by giving many people a day off. It’s a weekend we celebrate the end of summer, with cook-outs and backyard parties, a last dip in the pool, and maybe even sleeping in.

There are probably less of us traveling to the lake or squeezing in one last trip to the beach, but it’s my observation that this year, despite the increased time we are spending at home, many people are more in need of a day off than ever before. Whether your are employed and working, unemployed and seeking a job, retired, working from home, or doing the work of parenting, it is my prayer for you this weekend that you hear Jesus’ call from the Gospel of Matthew, and take it seriously this weekend. “Come to me, all you are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

From this scripture, hear this: rest and sabbath isn’t going to come to you. You’ve got to show up for rest and sabbath. There will be plenty of things you could get done this weekend. You will have to choose to set your burdens down, to find the rest Christ gives you. In Wayne Muller’s book Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in our Busy Lives he writes “Sabbath requires surrender. If we only stop when we are finished with all our work, we will never stop, because our work is never completely done. With every accomplishment there arises a new responsibility…Sabbath dissolved the artificial urgency of our days, because it liberates us from the need to be finished.”

Whatever you need to finish, don’t. This weekend, find at least one full day to stop, breathe, and be. Jesus isn’t going to finish what’s on your list for you, but he will certainly be present with you in your time of rest.

With the peace of Christ,
Rev. Jennie Sankey

Pandemic Task Force Update:
Your task force met this past Sunday and has been monitoring the health data and CoVID numbers for our county, surrounding counties, and the state of Georgia. While large groups and indoor gatherings are still not recommended, these leaders are hopeful that we will be able to move forward with some "baby steps" sooner rather than later. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support of this Task Force and your Session. Watch for a detailed update following the Session meeting next Sunday, September 13.
