Duke One Health Researchers Publish a Study Highlighting Viral Pathogens Missed by Real-time PCR
Duke One health researchers in the USA, Malaysia and Singapore published the findings of a pneumonia etiology study conducted in two hospitals in Sarawak, Malaysia in the journal Tropical Diseases, Travel Medicine and Vaccines. The study, led by Jane Fieldhouse, MSc, detected lower respiratory track infection pathogens that were missed by rPCR/rRT-PCR assays.

Duke One Health Team initiates the DGHI Viral Pathogen Discovery Network
After winning a small pilot grant from Duke Global Health Institute, the Duke One Health team is preparing reagents and supplies to establish a new pneumonia etiology network with a secondary focus upon pathogen discovery. Three collaborative sites will start enrolling pneumonia patients over 12 months with the aim of identifying and characterizing novel viruses among patients with pneumonia at the collaborating hospitals in Malaysia, Sri-Lanka, and Kenya.

A Look Inside the Duke Kunshan University One Health Research Laboratory (DKU-OHRL)
The Duke Kunshan University One Health Research Laboratory, directed by Professor Gregory C. Gray, with Dr. Ben Anderson as a deputy director, is now located in the new Innovation Building on the DKU campus, which is part of the DKU Global Health Research Center. The DKU-OHRL is chiefly a molecular diagnostic laboratory (Biosafety Level 2) for emerging infectious diseases, particularly those that are zoonotic. Projects conducted there include field studies and laboratory studies at the human-animal intersection. Multiple studies of novel influenza viruses, adenoviruses, enteroviruses and coronaviruses have already taken place at this laboratory.

Last May, a Global One Health Education Initiative was established to educate children in their first language and inspire One Health-focused community action around the world. The movement, lead by Dr. Deborah Thomson, has 160 volunteers that are actively working toward providing quality One Health lessons online in 43 languages.
