Part of the so-called 'Manawaka Series' that Laurence wrote about the women of a Canadian prairie, 'A Jest of God' is a strong and tender portrayal of the mind of a woman straightjacketed by loneliness, convention and time. Come for Laurence's uncanny ability to write the melody of her protagonist's interior, and stay for it, too.
