And We're Back!

It's been a while, eh? Thank you for sticking through the past two weeks, while I've been getting married and honeymooning. I can tell you that my wedding day was as magical as my (now) husband and I wanted it to be.

The week before we eloped was busy. I made my bouquet, for instance, as well as my husband's boutonniere. (Photos for everything are down below.)

We got married at Porteau Cove, which is a small provincial park outside of Squamish, BC. If you're ever in the area, you should stop in. It's gorgeous there. After the ceremony, we made a mad dash for the ferry and spent the next week in Victoria.

My husband and I have a habit of overcommitting our time on trips, and this time was no different. Though, we did try to schedule in some down time initially. We ended up going for a carriage ride down the Trans-Canada highway, whale watching in the fog (we saw three humpaback whales), the Butschart and Butterfly Gardens, a wine tour, and high tea at The Empress.

The Publishing Opportunity Round-up

While I was away reveling in wedded bliss, the publishing community continued to put out calls for submissions. Here's what you missed:
  1. The Story Plant is accepting manuscript queries in a variety of genres. They're currently only accepting fiction.
  2. Voyage publishes young adult (YA) fiction, as well as craft essays and YA creative nonfiction. They are open year-round, and their general submissions are fee-free.
  3. Journal of the Plague Year focuses on the pandemic, so all submissions must be centered around that. Many well-known journalists submit to the platform, but it's open to creative writers as well.
  4. Veratis Publishing publishes over 40 books annually in the areas of theology, scripture, prayer, spirituality, parenting, counselling, children’s issues, social commentary, and liturgical resources. They also publish religious educational text for use in Irish schools.
Good luck!

This week on Danielle Adams...

Paper Dragon is a new literary journal that publishes poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction, and art. They closed their submission period on September 1st, but keep an eye on them for their next reading period.
Bella Books publishes stories about women-loving-women. The press is currently looking for stories across all genres, including romance, mystery, thriller, paranormal, etc.
The following publishers are looking for poetry, fiction, and nonfiction in a variety of genres on specific topics. Each press pays its contributors.
On Thursday, we talked about the graphic novel: its history, and how to write one. If you've ever wanted to dip your toe into comics, then this is the post for you.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown - A Short Review

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?

• Enjoy a drunken night out.
• Ride a motorcycle.
• Go camping.
• Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
• Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
• And... do something bad.

But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.
My Rating: 4/5 stars

I don't have a lot to say about this book. It was cute, funny, and the character development was good. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next one in the series.

There were a few things that didn't make sense, like most of the secondary characters. Yes, I know they're not supposed to have a lot of screen time, but they really didn't serve much of a purpose in the narrative. I also thought some of the wrap-ups Talia Hibbert did in the epilogue was a bit strange as well.

Other than those two minor things, the story was well done!

What I'm Reading

I didn't get as much reading time last week as I thought I would. (Hello, we scheduled down days for goodness sake!) So I still have quite a long to be read list (TBR).

It also didn't help that we ended up finding a book store that had an excellent mythology section. I now am the proud owner of the complete fairytales of Hans Christen Anderson and the Grimm Brothers. I am quite excited to sink my teeth into both of these books. (I've already started on the Anderson collection.)

But in case you need a refresher, here's my ever-expanding to-read list:
  • To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • The Lord of the Rings by J. R.R. Tolkein
  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
  • The Help by Kathyrn Stockett
  • Tick Tock by Dean Koontz
  • Where the Crawdad's Sing by Delia Owens
  • Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston
  • Tweet Cute by Emma Lord
  • The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
  • The Raven's Poison by Braeden Michels
  • Hans Christian Anderson Tales (Translated by Jean Hersholt)
  • Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm
And if there are any books that you think I should read, I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks for reading this far!

Stay safe. Stay sane. Wear a mask and call a friend.

I'll be back on September 13th.
