Editorial

As our Virtual Dialogue Series on global responses to the Covid-19 pandemic takes shape, we have added three more events to our list, two already in September: the first one about Europe and the impact of the pandemic on democracy on the 16th, and the second about the incredibly successful measures taken in the Southern Indian State of Kerala on the 28th. On our blog we've also got two new posts for you: on the oft-neglected topic of edible insects as a healthy and environmentally-friendly food source, and on the EU's Covid-19 recovery plan which, as the author warns, threatens to leave other regions of the world behind. In addition, we've got some news and publications picks, and the usual collections of job offers, online activities, calls and opinion.
From our Blog
Insects on the Plates!
Have you ever considered eating insects? if not, this blog post may give you a new perspective: there are more than 2100 species of edible insects available, and in many countries  they are a tasty, healthy and environmentally friendly food source, with many good recipes around. During their research, Sarah Nischalke and Sebastian Forneck from the Center for Development Research at Bonn University (ZEF) dove deep into everything related to edible insects: "What surprised us the most during the first research phase was the fact that people who like to eat insects or even collect or catch insects are not necessarily interested in setting up their own mini-livestock farm." It’s about Europe’s future, stupid!
In his commentary on the European Commission's COVID19 recovery plan "NextGenerationEU”,  Michael Obrovsky from the Austrian Foundation for Development Research  argues that, against the background of the global pandemic, there is an urgent need for the EU to step up its international cooperation efforts. "While new instruments and billions of euros are being provided for the recovery of the European economy", he writes, "the EU’s international cooperation framework with the Global South is still based on a pre-COVID-19 approach". However, "Europe’s prosperity and its role in the world will depend on how the global community manages with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic" Read the post

Virtual Dialogue Series on COVID19 Coping Strategies
Speakers from around the world will explore the variety of responses to the pandemic from a multidisciplinary perspective and offer insights into the local realities and lived experiences in different regions.
Tackling the pandemic without doing away with democracy. Europe and its global context, 16th September, 14.00 CET
Julia Leininger from the German Development Institute will discuss the political consequences of the Covid19-pandemic. She focuses on the pandemic’s influence on democracies in Europe and the world. Lockdowns are epidemiological measures, which restrict individual freedoms. While this opens doors to autocratization in some countries, it brings out democratic strengths in other countries. For some time, it has been taken for granted that Europe is a safe haven for democracy. This assumption has been proven wrong for a while. The pandemic accelerated autocratization trends.
