👋🏾 Hey From Colorintech - #018

RIP to a real superhero and Icon in Chadwick Boseman.

Many tributes have flooded in, and we have few words more beautifully than we saw from Ryan Coogler (Director of Black Panther) - Link here
🗞️Diversity and inclusion news🗞️
😔We've been busy building bridges with VCs 😔

We've been busy building relationships with VC's in the UK (check out the news this week) but part of the reason in doing so because we (like all consumers) make choices based on the actions of the orgs around us👩🏽‍⚖️.

Pitchbook here published an article on it  which we only just discovered now, but wanted to share anyway 🙌🏾

Talking about VC also got us thinking about one of the world's most backed VC companies, Uber. We were happy to see this campaign hit the billboards this weekend

⚖️Thinking of gender on scales?⚖️

We found this article interesting which proposed how gender (which is often considered as a spectrum by some, could be reconceptualized a scales)⚖️

An interesting read
🧠Things that make you go hmmm🧠
📲TikTok CEO Resigns📲

The big news in the industry was that TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer, resigned from the troubled tech company this last week. It was huge news in the industry, but somewhat understandable, after all, the role he signed up for (an international CEO) was threatened and curtailed by the movements from the US Gov to limit the ownership of TikTok🤨.

After leaving his role at Dinsey on just earlier this year Kevin said, he had signed up for a global role and that leading a global team had been a “big draw” for him. Even Tik Tok admitted, "We appreciate that the political dynamics of the last few months have significantly changed what the scope of Kevin’s role would be going forward, and fully respect his decision"🤔.

Nonetheless, they say all publicity is good publicity... Well on this topic, we're not sure if that's correct, but admirers across the social media aisle won't be short, as we can see in this article about all the times Instagram, have ... copied features😅

And a nice long read on TikTok

So what?: One of the most challenging jobs in tech today is vacant (Vanessa Pappas, general manager of TikTok in North America, will take over in the interim)

🖥️Paying your rivals🖥️

So last week we spoke about Google paying Mozilla (Firefox), well this week we're trumping it.

Apple fresh of being a £2tn company makes around £7-8bn from Google paying to be the default search engine off of Apple's Safari browser. Well, it turns out we saw this article in Forbes which asked "What if Apple went it alone?" Afterall it removed its reliance on Google maps launching its own version aptly named... Apple Maps.🤔

The article highlights the loss of revenue (up to $15bn) that Google makes from being the number one choice on Safari, but also how it may spike up completion between Frenemies

Worth an interesting read on the topics around Ads🧐

So what?: Apple probably won't be going into the search game any time soon😅

🔊Virtual events🔊

Spotify hit the news this week after their code was reverse-engineered to reveal they're trying to jump on the wave of the virtual events

Yep love them or loath them, (not all are as pioneering as the Tomorrowland one) clearly as interest has all but dried up for immediate bookings of events or tickets through the Spotify platform🥵, this slight pivot makes a tonne of sense whilst COVID-19 remains the scourge of the live events businesses😷

Napster... who remembers them (we're showing off our age)? Well if you don't, they were one of the pioneers of internet-enabled music that hit some notoriety due to their role in facilitating some questionable file-sharing practices 😅. Well they shut down, but the name lives on and they came back as a legit streaming company which just happened to be sold this week to an AR virtual events company 👀🤔

So what?: Virtual concerts may not be everyone's thing, but there is probably a niche which is here to stay

🐖Remote controlled pigs🦾

🦾Fresh from overtaking Mark Zuckerberg as one of the worlds richest people Elon Musk was showing off his latest innovation from his semi secretive Neuralink startup.

🐖He bought a pig called Gertrude to the fore to show the Digital link between brains and computers. A wireless link from the computer showed us the pig's brain activity as it snuffled around a pen on stage. As musk calls it "It's like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires".

Musk's latest bet has a medical focus to start, like helping people deal with the brain and spinal cord injuries but undoubtedly the ambition is huge. Who'd bet against him🤑

So what?: Sci-Fi is getting a bit closer to reality
