COVID rates are quickly increasing among children in the U.S. Hospitalizations and deaths from COVID are increasing at a faster rate among children and teenagers compared to the general public. Black and Latinx children are more likely to be hospitalized. The data set looks at cases, hospitalizations, and deaths that occurred from May 21- August 20. The number of infected children has doubled since AAP published its recommendations that schools should reopen. Children ages 10-19 make up the majority of cases. People under 20 years old are still thought to be about half as susceptible to contracting the virus compared to those older than 20.

Community leaders in Chicago filed a civil rights complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The complaint accuses the city of pushing polluting industries from white, wealthy neighborhoods to Black and Latinx communities and as a result, worsening segregation and housing discrimination. General Iron, a metal recycling facility that had two explosions previously this year, is specifically named in the lawsuit. The facility is scheduled to close its North Side location and move to the Southeast Side. The North Side location will be home to a $6 billion development that is scheduled to break ground early next year and the Southeast Side is home to two federal Superfund sites.
