The Red Tent Women's Initiative

October 2020 Newsletter Issue 2

“Red Tent was a beautiful experience in my life that allowed me to find a peace inside that I never knew was there.” -Tosha, Participant

A Note from Founder, Barbara Rhode

Red Tent has been such an important part of my life since I started it in 2012 and the ripple effects of what we have been doing can often catch me by surprise.  Before COVID changed our lives in so many challenging ways, I had the opportunity to attend a community meeting for Red Tent.

At the end of the meeting a teenager walked up to me and shyly said that she thought I might know her mother. When we shook hands to introduce ourselves, I could see that she had tears in her eyes. She quickly explained that her mom had been in Red Tent in the jail back in 2015 and she cried when she told me that it made such a huge difference in her mom’s life and in hers.  She told me that her mom had been an addict throughout her childhood and now she said, beaming, “I have my mom for the first time in my life and she is healthy and not using drugs ever since Red Tent came into her life”.

We hugged and cried together. I treasure those moments and I don’t think life can get much better than that.

“Thank you Red Tent for helping me through much of my mental battle, coping skills, and feeling like I wasn't alone. I love this program!!” -Deana, Participant

Gratitude For A Community Who Cares

A unique partnership was launched to help the most vulnerable of our local residents affected by COVID-19. The Tampa Bay Resiliency Fund is a strategic collaboration of four local foundations with nearly $1 million and administered by the Pinellas Community Foundation.

Red Tent was awarded funds to help our newly released women with rent, utilities and food. Many of the women had reduced work hours because of COVID and couldn’t pay all of their bills.  Others ran short on food in order to pay their rent.  This money kept some women from making the choice to live in their car or on the streets and giving up their apartment. Red Tent is very grateful to our community to ensure health and safety for our women.

Doubling Our Impact

What’s better than ONE Red Tent class at the Pinellas County Jail?  TWO Red Tent classes at the Pinellas County Jail.

Thanks to the support of the jail, Red Tent has been given the green light to double our impact and conduct a second ongoing class. With successful fundraising, we hope to begin this new class in Feb. 2021.  This means that twice as many women will experience the positive impact of the Red Tent class which includes healing and improving their lives, reducing recidivism and allowing families to stay together.  Plus as a tax payer, fewer of your dollars go to paying the incarceration costs.  Everyone wins.

If you donate to Red Tent (and we sure appreciate it if you do) your money supports this second class.  Doesn’t it feel good to make a difference?  A DONATE button is below.

"Red Tent showed me love, guidance, and unwavering       support as I began the process of admitting and   accepting that I needed to make new, life-changing   decisions in my life and in myself as I sought a better   way of life.  This is a place where women can come   together to share life experiences both good and bad   and also indifferent. It's a place to share a unitedness with other women who support you and care about you and offer their heart.

Red Tent is the real deal. As we are sharing and caring with one another we are also crafting together and there are a large variety of crafts to experience and participate in. These are women who have been there for me during the best and worst times of my life. I have never experienced anything quite like this and I definitely will be keeping it in my life." - Theresa, Red Tent Participant
