NEXT ACCLA MEETING WILL BE HELD ONLINE

HADRIAN'S TRAVEL SERIES

Our next meeting will be held Sunday September 13, starting at 1:30 PM, via Zoom. The meeting will feature a presentation by Mike Markowitz entitled Hadrian's Travel Series. Mike will be joining us live from the Washington DC area and will be presenting an overview of the celebrated series of coins minted during Hadrian's travels around his Empire.

The link to the meeting on Zoom will be posted on the accla-list so please join the accla-list if you have not done so already. The accla-list, the Club's private email listserve, helps members to easily connect to the rest of the group and take part in discussions at any time. If you are not signed up, email me and I will send you an invitation.

ACCLA will also be hosting another Ancient Coin Lounge on Zoom starting at 1:30 PM on August 23. The link to the ACCLA Ancient Coin Lounge will be posted on the accla-list. Members and their guests are welcome to attend. If you have questions, email me.

LAST MEETING, ACCLA ANCIENT COIN LOUNGE, & OTHER UPDATES

  • The August 9 meeting was our fifth monthly meeting held online on Zoom. Twenty one members and guests were in attendance. 
  • Vice-President Roger Burry announced that the September 13 program will feature Mike Markowitz on Hadrian's Travel Series. Randy Butler, John Borneman, and Rich Basler will be presenting in October, November and December. If you have a program to give or ideas for a program please email Roger.

Last Month's Presentation

  • The August 9 program featured Roger Burry talking on Coins of the Roman Empire, Part III. Roger continued his review of Roman Imperial numismatics from Diocletian to Julius Nepos. Thank you Roger for another well-researched and outstanding presentation !

ACCLA Ancient Coin Lounge

  • The fourth ACCLA Ancient Coin Lounge was held on on Sunday August 23 via Zoom. Fourteen members and guests got together to chat about ancient coins, books, and recent acquisitions. We learned a lot about Antony's legionary denarii, Dave Michaels showed a couple of coins from the next Triton Auction, and we also reviewed the movie The Legion now available on Amazon Prime.The next ACCLA Ancient Coin Lounge will be held September 27, two weeks after our regular Monthly Meeting.

RECENT ACQUISITIONS

 

Syracusian Tetradrachm

Mike and Karin Cozzolino recently acquired this spectacular Syracusian tetradrachm minted under the rule of the tyrant Agathokles of Syracuse circa 317-310 BCE. The obverse of the silver tetradrachm (16.90 g) features the head of Arethusa, wearing a pearl necklace and triple drop earring, her hair bound with a wreath of grain ears, around her swim three dolphins, below her neck are the letters ΝΙ. The reverse features a four-horse chariot, the rider pulling at the reins with one hand and reaching out with a crop in the other, above is a triskeles, under a double groundline is ΣYPAKOΣIΩN above a monogram. Byzantine Gold

Bob Effler recently acquired his first Byzantine gold piece, a solidus of Tiberius II Constantine who ruled 578-582 CE. The solidus (21 mm, 4.48 g, 7 h) was minted in Constantinopolis between 579-582 CE. The obverse features his draped and cuirassed facing bust wearing a crown surmounted by a small cross and with pendilia, holding globus cruciger in his right hand and shield, decorated with cavalryman on horseback, in his left, δm TIb CONS-TANT P P AVG around.
