Today at Shumway
September 2020

The Rockford Area Arts Council's mission is simple--to support, promote, and develop access to the arts for everyone. We are the collective voice for individual artists and regional arts organizations—and you!

In keeping with announcements at the top--I thought we'd try a 'Breaking News' caption to excite our readers to investigate all our good press--Enjoy!

Access Grants are now available through the Arts Council. Access grants are partially supported by the Illinois Arts Council Agency, with additional support from the City of Rockford and Arts Council memberships. Grants are awarded in our four-county service area--Boone, Winnebago, Ogle, and DeKalb Counties. Fundamental to the mission of the Arts Council, grants are one of several ways the Arts Council addresses its goal to nurture, cultivate, and advocate for artists and arts organizations. Access Grants are reviewed by an independent, credentialed panel of arts professionals and community members. APPLY TODAY!
Hello Rockford Region artists,

Well, there is no shortage of social justice inspiration for artwork these days! Please check out what young Rockford artists created at the Nicholas Conservatory art exhibit: BLM stop-motion animation and compelling banners!

Shumway Market is hosting a newly installed steel and plexiglass sculpture by local artist, August Lain Weickert. Stop by the Arts Council to check it out!  Not only do we have a new logo, but Shumway has also seen many-a-makeover this year...thanks to the City of Rockford, we are the recipients of new paint, tuckpointing, and concrete apron.

Fall ArtScene is canceled...however, the Arts Council is hosting ArtScene reimagined: Arts and Culture Showcase (ACS); the Arts and Culture Showcase will support participating venues and promote artists and their work, on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10. Hours will vary by venue. Appropriate changes and modifications will be made to ensure the safety of our patrons, artists, and venues! All venues must Pledge as a part of their application submission.

The Arts Council is a co-chair of the Rockford Rebounding committee, ACE: Arts, Culture, and Events. We are developing a comprehensive list of arts and culture organizations; streamlining the ACE process of programs and events; and providing the community with easy-access information for the connection to the appropriate resources. You can find updated resources here...Soon, you will find these critical resources on the Arts Council's website and the City's website.

Additionally, the Our Journey Microgrants for artists continue to enrich the lives of local artists and regional arts organizations by providing critical funding for special projects or essential services. The Arts Council is honored to be included in this partnership with the RACVB and RAD. We are inspired by the ‘Our Journey’ recipients. From keeping the lights on to mural painting to original music scores, ‘Our Journey’, microgrants for artists, are positively impacting our arts and culture community during a critical time of challenge and uncertainty.   Apply today!

For the Public
Our arts and culture organizations continue to do more with less. Our budgets are shrinking, our audiences are empty--we need our supporters now more than ever.

You can support our region's arts and culture groups in three ways!
  1. We need to know what you need from us in the coming months. Please contact your favorite arts/culture organizations and voice your concerns and contribute your ideas.
  2.  We need your support--membership renewals and social media attention are simple steps you can take to make a lasting impact.
  3.  Additionally, you can purchase season tickets, register for future classes, investigate summer instruction for you and/or your child, plan a trip to visit a museum--even virtually!

Art Exhibit at Nicholas Conservatory. Stop by the Nicholas Conservatory to see the SPARK! exhibit; SPARK! is one of the Arts Council's summer youth art programs. This summer SPARK! participants, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, developed a stop-motion animation video combined with interviews, and four powerful social justice banners.

Rockford Area Arts Awards categories and applications will be available on October 24, 2020.
In accordance with social distancing, our celebration will be split into two showcased events, and subsequently twice the amount of exposure for your practice. On October 24, a 'year-in-review' video of local arts and cultural events, programs, and performances will premiere. Additionally, the Rockford Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate will be announced. The traditional awards ceremony will take place in the spring of 2021. We are eager to share unique performances, pieces, and events from our talented Rockford arts community.
