New in-depth inquiry: the future of ageing

We are pleased to announce that we will soon begin a new in-depth inquiry on the future of ageing. The inquiry will explore the ethical implications of the emerging role of science and technology in helping people live well in old age.

We are inviting expressions of interest in being involved in this project in any way, and who would like to be kept updated on our plans.

We also welcome input on ways to engage with older people to scope and shape this inquiry and also any relevant literature which we should consider as we begin to undertake desk research on the topic.

The care and treatment of young people in relation to their gender identity in the UK

Over a series of meetings in autumn 2019, we explored the ethical challenges involved in providing care and treatment for young people in relation to their gender identity. A summary of what we heard is now available.

We listened to a range of people. This included people or representatives of people who have experiences of using gender identity services in the UK, medical practitioners and others involved in the provision of these services, and researchers with expertise in this area. There were some clear areas of agreement among the meeting participants, as well as some areas of disagreement.

Hugh Whittall, Director at the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, said: “It’s encouraging that people are not so far apart in their views as media headlines can suggest, and that it can be possible to find some common ground. However, there are a number of unresolved ethical challenges involved in providing care and support for young people in relation to their gender identity. We would like to help find a way forward, and these meetings have given us a basis on which to plan some further work in this area.”

Face off: the ethics of compulsory mask policies

by Ruth Campbell, Programme Manager

The introduction of compulsory mask policies in the UK has prompted a mixture of compliance and contention. Those who oppose the wearing of masks tend to point to two things to justify that stance: a lack of, or inconsistent evidence of their benefits, and an infringement of liberty rights. In the midst of a global pandemic, these arguments don’t hold up to scrutiny.
