The Jaffa Kid - Twilight Imagery [OF020]

Since the mid-2000s The Jaffa Kid has traced the ‘shadow’ with incorporeal layers that either take flight cloudward or submerge into the thickets of the unconscious. These synthesised leitmotifs are the webbing for patterns of dissipated rave anthems, often interlaced with overcast break-beats, to unfurl across rituals out of dormancy, memory retrieval, and awakening. Yet instead of merely implying its presence, Twilight Imagery fully embodies the ‘shadow’, enabling its fabric to flutter alone – borrowing into the lunar soaked passages of the dream realm. In this space, a slow transuding eventuates the quicksand separating harmony, accord, and tranquility with a nightmarish trench into the abyss.

Twilight Imagery’s materiality rarely congeals; it floats, trickles, and evaporates, but always in flux. “M Scratch”, perhaps the most iconically ambient track, recalls the serenity of Steve Roach’s Structures From Silence (1986), yet something softly tugs at its form, perverting the image to evoke sinking in a loch. Alas, what else could breathe the night air after drowning other than ghosts? “Lost Wave II” superimposes a spectral choral arrangement with alien articulations flowing out of the percolating whispers of its opening half.

“Gaitain”, the flip-side opener, summons back The Jaffa Kid of 1990s rave hypnagogia with a quintessential Detroit electro charge and ineffable melodies seeping out of a lost IDM classic. But the drum machines on the surface start and end with “Gaitan”. The remainder of the tape issues deeper and deeper into the water table amid a parabola of half-light.

Twilight Imagery was conceived and recorded from 2018–2020 in The Jaffa Kid’s bedroom in Newcastle with an Access Virus, Nord A1, Blofeld, Pro 2, and Prophet 6. It was mastered by Andrea Merlini in Italy and printed at Good Press in Glasgow. Artwork by Conor Walker.

The C54 super ferric tape comes enclosed in a glacial-white reverie-screen cartridge with a 2-layer risograph printed j-card. Limited to 75.
