Dear Parents and Guardians,

These past few days have been full of making meaningful connections...learning student names, meeting new families, and connecting virtually with students learning from home. Though we have had to practice much patience and flexibility during these first few days of school, it is all worth it when we get to watch our students playing, laughing, singing, studying, and learning, whether online or in person.  One of the highlights of this week, for me, has been walking around in the morning and seeing every class engaged in Responsive Classroom practices during morning meetings.  Teachers and students are taking time to greet each and every person in the room and then finding ways to build community through activities and conversation.  By purposefully building this time into our school day, we hope to highlight our belief that we are made by God to love and be loved.  Click HERE for another short video.

I want to thank all of you for your patience and understanding with our new arrival and dismissal procedures.  We have adjusted dismissal for a few groups and this seemed to help.  We will continue to watch carefully to determine if more adjustments are needed in the future. Please try to arrive for your carpool as close as possible to your dismissal time.

Thank you  HASA for providing the fun surprise of yard decorations to welcome back students on Monday! Thank you to the Bajuyo family who donated air purifiers for classrooms in an effort to help keep us even safer! And lastly thank you for continuing to vote for Holy Cross School for the Reader's Choice Award. Keep voting!  Please look later in this newsletter for a link to continue voting.

A few reminders:

  • Please send your child with a water bottle, lunch, and mask each day
  • Emergency card forms will be sent in your child’s folder today.  Please make sure you fill these out and return as soon as possible.
  • NO SCHOOL this Friday, September 4th or Monday, September 7th

For Remote learners only:

  • A mailbox system has been set up in the main vestibule.  Each remote family has a place to pick up and drop off work done at home.  Please remember to come pick up your child’s red folder every Monday (or first school day of the week) and to return it on Friday afternoons (or last school day of the week).
  • Remote learner attendance: Please remember to fill out the appropriate attendance form each day for each child doing remote learning in your house.  This needs to be done by 8:15 a.m. in order to count your child as present.
  • Regularly scheduled online meetings: Your child should be connecting in Google Meets regularly with a teacher from Holy Cross.  If you do not know your child’s schedule for his/her online meetings, please let us know!  If you have any questions, please feel free to write to remotelearning@holycrosscrusaders.org

Have a blessed week!

Queridos padres y guardianes,

For the past five years we have been blessed by the ministry of Kristen Hempstead McGann as our director of children’s catechesis, who ends her service as our catechetical leader tomorrow. We were especially fortunate to have Kristen’s leadership of our parish catechesis program in light of her extensive background in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which Holy Cross Parish alone, in this area of the diocese, offers at all three age levels, attracting children from other parishes to our catechesis program.
Kristen is trained in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 1 (ages 3-6) in 2006, in Level 2 (ages 6-9) in 2007, and Level 3 (ages 9-12) in 2008. She has been recognized by the National Association of Catechists of the Good Shepherd as a formation leader since 2015. Kristen described her focus as our director of children’s catechesis as helping the community to support the faith life of the children of our parish and to prepare to support the children we will serve in the future. She focused much of her time on recruiting and supporting a team of catechists, hosting formation programs for catechists, developing the atrium (where Catechesis of the Good Shepherd takes place in the basement of the Smith Parish Center), and supporting parents in their role as the first catechists of their children. In leaving her position at Holy Cross, Kristen will continue her work as a formation leader, traveling to other communities to train catechists, while, fortunately for us, continuing to volunteer as a catechist here at our parish.
We are deeply grateful for the expertise, enthusiasm, deep commitment, and concern for our children’s religious formation that she brought to her ministry. Our catechetical program developed in significant ways under her leadership. Please join me in wishing God’s continued blessings upon Kristen in this time of transition.
