Dear YESS community,
The COVID-19 crisis hasn’t stopped our members to stay active and organize activities to bring ECRs together, at least virtually. During the past months the community showed that despite all the difficulties associated with the pandemic we were able to work together and achieve great things. This newsletter is just a glimpse of the energy and enthusiasm that our members devote to YESS.
We are very proud of the work done in the last months and we hope you enjoyed being part of YESS.

We are delighted to announce that Faten Attig Bahar, YESS Executive Committee member, has been elected to be part of the World Meteorological Organization Research Board.
The Research Board on Weather, Climate, Water and the Environment (Research Board) translates the strategic aims of WMO and decisions of Executive Council and Congress into overarching research priorities and ensures the implementation and coordination of the research programmes to achieve these priorities, in accordance with the purposes of Organization defined in Article 2(f) of the Convention.

We thank WMO for giving the opportunity for ECRs to be part of its structure. We hope that in the future more ECRs can play a role in WMO programmes and panels. Congratulations Faten!

YESS Online Events Working Group leads the development of webinars on multiple scientific topics. During June and July, YESS hosted two webinars in which more than 50 ECRs participated.
The first webinar, From global mean sea level changes to land-atmosphere interactions, was given by Dr. Min-Hui Lo, from the National Taiwan University. The webinar series continued in July with Dr. Elizabeth Barnes, from Colorado State University, who gave a talk entitled Detecting climate signals through an AI lens.

With the success of the first edition of the Science Webinar and the interests shown by the YESS community, the team comprising members from the Online Events and Science Working Groups launches the second edition of the Science Webinar series. This series will be focused on Climate Change topics.
The goal of the webinar series is to keep the community well informed with the latest research and broaden their knowledge in areas of the Earth sciences. The online activities have been helpful in the professional development of early-career researchers and keep them motivated during these uncertain times.

YESS and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) are delighted to announce the first edition of the Citizen Science Webinar series between September and November 2020.
The webinars aim to enable further discussion on this topic and bring together scientists, stakeholders and the fresh vision of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) under the same umbrella to foster the understanding of resilience to high impact weather, worldwide, through improving forecasts for different timescales and enhance their communication and utility in social, economic and environmental applications.

In addition, a team led by the YESS South American representatives and members from the region are organizing a webinar series on Career opportunities and experiences in Climate and Weather research for South American scientists. The goal of this project is to introduce to the students and young scientists of South America opportunities and challenges in the field of climate and weather research in the region.
The first edition was on August 26th and the topic discussed was From Latin America to the world: Doing a PhD/PostDoc in a foreign university. The speakers were two South American researchers who are currently living in Germany: Jorge Saturno (National Metrology Institute – PTB) and Stefanie Talento (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research - PIK). The next speakers will be announced through our social media soon.

The next AGU Fall Meeting will host a transdisciplinary virtual session for ECRs entitled Moving Beyond the Standard. This event will be co-organized by a group of ECRs and international ECR networks spanning multiple identities and disciplines to ensure diverse and inclusive perspectives during event planning and community engagement.
This event will facilitate ECR collaboration between the AGU sections and neighborhoods by cultivating inclusive, transdisciplinary fellowship through research, networking, and mentoring opportunities. Among the topics discussed will be fundamental research, public engagement, and pressing issues for ECRs.
The event will include a mix of panel discussions, eLightening presentations, virtual posters, mentoring opportunities, and networking events. We are very much looking forward to this event! Stay tuned to receive more information about this session.

Call to join Membership and Outreach Working Groups
|

Do you want to become an active member of the YESS community? The YESS Working Groups (WG) are seeking new members. We would love to have you on our team!
|
|
The Outreach WG safeguards the YESS branding and aims to ensure that YESS is presented in a unified way globally.
The team develops brochures, documents, publishes newsletters and keeps YESS active on social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).
We seek YESS members for help with:
- Update of the website content (~2 hours per month).
- Refresh outreach material (~3 hours total).

The Membership WG deals with membership aspects in the YESS community, including the registration process and questions how to get involved more actively in the community.
Furthermore, they are responsible for the YESS website.
We seek YESS members for:
- Membership management (~3 hrs per month).
- Website technical expert (~6 hrs per month).

IPCC SOD WG II Group Review
|
|
|
|
YESS is co-organizing a group review of the Second Order Draft (SOD) of the WGII contribution to the IPCC main assessment report AR6 (SOD WGII-AR6) by Early Career Researchers. The purpose of this expert review group is to provide a comprehensive review of the SOD WGII-AR6 report using the variety of knowledge that our members and ECRs can provide.
We are now looking for reviewers to participate in this group review (December 2020 - January 2021). Partakers will be asked to review a minimum of 10 to 20 pages of the report (if you want to review the entire report, the IPCC offers opportunities to do so from its side). By participating, reviewers not only get recognized as early career experts, but also gain valuable training and insight in the scientific review process for reports written for policy makers.

YESS aims to highlight the scientific contributions by Early Career Researchers in the community to make their work more visible and to enhance scientific interactions among community members and beyond.
For this, we developed a special space in our webpage in which your contribution is shared with the community. In addition, every month we disseminate the highlights of the past month on social media.

Guidelines to submit your highlight:
- You should be a YESS member.
- The paper should be in the scope of interdisciplinary Earth system sciences (natural and social sciences).
- You should be an author of the paper (lead or co-author).
- The paper should be published within the last six months.
- Citation should be in APA format + DOI.
- Add a link to your YESS profile.
- Add a picture/figure from your paper to feature on the website (optional).
- Add Twitter account so we can tag you in our posts (optional).
