WHAT'S THE WORD ON THE STREET?

BIKE TO W(HEREVER) DAY 2020
Thursday, September 24

While Bike to Work Day is normally held annually on the second Thursday in May, this year the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated rescheduling it to late September. On this special day, and throughout the week of 9/20 – 9/26, WOBO and bicycling allies encourage people to try out some of Oakland’s newer bicycling infrastructure, visit Slow Streets, and ride the BRT’s bike-friendly buses.

How to Join the Fun

We will not be hosting the traditional celebratory fair at City Hall this year.  Still, we have several ways for everyone to experience the joy of moving by bicycle. Check out our plans for Bike To W(herever) Day:
  • Play Bike Bingo and win prizes
  • Share a ride you take during the week on social media (tag us @walkoakbikeoak)
  • Bike somewhere new
  • Volunteer to help (see below)
And don't forget to claim your bike bag full of goodies!  More information to come over the next few weeks on this and other WOBO activities in September.

How You Can Help (1):
Postering for BTWD 2020

We need help promoting BTWD 2020 by putting up posters in sanctioned locations around Oakland, especially in Slow Streets areas.  We're scheduling the postering for the week starting 9/7 - if you'd like to participate please fill out our volunteer form using the button below.

How You Can Help (2):
Distributing bike bags

Help give BTWD 2020 a rolling start by dropping off bike bags for participants at locations throughout Oakland. We're scheduling these drop-offs for the weekend of 9/19-20; to take part please fill out our volunteer form using the button below.

HAVE A SAY IN THE GRAND AVENUE MOBILITY PLAN

The Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) needs your input for the Grand Avenue Mobility Plan to create a corridor that reinforces fair and just treatment, and safety for all.

There are two ways for you to engage right now:

1) a survey and
2) an interactive web map

The survey will ask questions about how you use Grand Avenue and about your visions for the street in the future. The web map will allow you to drop points on the corridor where you experience issues. Please visit https://bit.ly/oaklandgrandave to help create a community-led vision for Grand Avenue.

AC TRANSIT TEMPO NOW IN SERVICE

On August 9th AC Transit's new long-awaited BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) service aka Tempo began operating along International Boulevard from the San Leandro border to downtown.  Best of all, bikes can be rolled on board and right into a bike rack inside the bus.  See here for more information about Tempo.

WOBO encourages all to give this new service a try as a way of taking more cars off the streets.  You can ride fare-free for the first 90 days so come on out!

FILLED OUT YOUR CENSUS?REGISTERED TO VOTE?

Reminder that the 2020 census is scheduled to complete operations at the end of this month.  We urge everyone who has not completed a census form to please do so before Sept 30 to make sure you're counted - census data helps determine how public funds are allocated and it's important that cyclists and pedestrians have a say.  To complete your census online see https://my2020census.gov/.

The election is fast approaching, so please make sure you're registered to vote in Alameda County to have a say in local measures, office-holders etc.  To register online, or verify you're already registered, please see https://registertovote.ca.gov/.
