Anxiety and Autism: Family-based Strategies for Returning to School After Shelter-in-Place

Eliminating Sugary Drinks in a Large Health System: Leveraging Data for Systems Change Webinar - Recording
Join the Public Health Law Center and American Cancer Society in learning from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which ended the sale of sugary drinks in all campus sites and medical facilities in 2015. The presenters in this recording discuss the development and implementation of the UCSF Healthy Beverage Initiative, how they evaluated the impact of the policy on employee health, and how they are leveraging their experience to catalyze broader change.

CFHL, UCCE El Dorado County Distributes Nutrition Kits!
At Georgetown (GT) School of Innovation, nutrition kits were distributed on August 13th to parents for the entire student body of 280 students. At parent-teacher meetings, parents picked up student school supplies from teachers for the Fall semester. The kits are intended to reinforce the virtual direct education and youth-led participatory action research project that is being planned for this school year.
Nutrition kits contained indirect education on MyPlate and general healthy eating, CalFresh Food sign-up information, NERI/cookbooks, and invitations for the whole family to participate in virtual direct education lessons. Victory Garden Kits contain seeds, recipes, and gardening resources for Spring 2021 semester garden activities in partnership with El Dorado Master Gardeners. The Victory Garden Kits are intended to support continuing garden-based education at Georgetown School of Innovation.

CFHL, UCCE Kern County Offers Las Mariposas Head Start Families PA + Food Resource Management
Las Mariposas Head Start is a state preschool and seasonal migrant head start located in Delano, CA. a city 31 miles from Bakersfield. The seasonal migrant program provides no cost childcare and preschool services to low-income families whose primary income is from agricultural production or harvesting. To promote creating health lifestyles in the families they serve, administrators and staff at Las Mariposas Head Start collaborated with CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE Kern (CFHL, UCCE Kern) by offering students Coordinated Approach to Child Health Early Childhood Education (CATCH ECE). CFHL, UCCE Kern County also provided 55 parents with Plan, Shop, Save, and Cook food resource management lessons. During the lessons, parents are reminded about the importance of physical activity, and are given recommendations based on the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
CFHL, UCCE Kern staff provided teachers with a four hour CATCH ECE training, and technical assistance twice per month. Teachers expressed their appreciation for the CATCH ECE Kit and technical assistance indicating that the program helped teachers nourish the love for physical activity in their students. From October 2019 to August 2020, 32 students received a total of 69.25 hours of structured physical activity using CATCH ECE curriculum and staff provided 5 hours of food resource management lessons to parents.

Description: Voices for Healthy Kids is currently accepting proposals for the Policy Campaign Grant designed to support strategic issue advocacy campaigns supporting Voices for Healthy Kids policy priorities with a focus on health equity. Applications must be specific to an individual campaign for public policy change in one state, city, town or county, or tribal nation. Applications should focus on public policy changes to reduce health disparities for children in urban, suburban or rural settings who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, and Alaskan Native or from families who have low income.
