STUDENT REP APPLICATIONS OPEN THRU SEPT 14

The AFHS PTSA is now accepting applications for student reps.  What is a student rep?  Well, a student rep is a student volunteer and a member of the PTSA.   They are required to attend a minimum of three board meetings and one general membership meeting as well as complete two PTSA volunteer projects during the current
school year.  They also act as liaisons between the PTSA and the student body, as we are a Parent, Teacher, STUDENT, Association.  We want them to be involved in helping with current projects and events, but also be a sounding board and a source for new ideas.  More formally:

Purposes of Student Representation

  • Students bring a new perspective to PTA/PTSA ideas and programs.
  • Viewpoints and ideas of students are essential because all PTA/PTSA programs focus on youth.
  • Students and adults obtain a better understanding and appreciation of one another by working side by side on goal-related projects.
  • Students gain leadership skills, such as goal-setting, decision-making, team building and conflict resolution while enhancing their own personal growth and development.
  • Students obtain community service opportunities. Active PTA/PTSA involvement is an excellent addition to any college or job application.
The application will be open through September 14th and can be found on the www.afhsptsa.org and was posted to our FB page, as well as, twitter.  It's a great opportunity for your student to be involved this year!  Once all applications have been submitted, they will be reviewed by members of the PTSA Board.  If chosen, students will be contacted and invited to join our Sept 21st meeting to be voted on.
Your student can also access the application HERE.

WELCOME BACK BREAKFAST A SUCCESS!
We were so happy that we were able to go ahead with a Welcome Back Breakfast for at least some of our staff.  The PTSA hosted the breakfast on Thursday, August 27th for about 75 staff.  We were so lucky to have the event sponsored by Jamie Tulak of exp Realty.  We also had many donations from local businesses including Chick-fil-A, Harris Teeter & Biscuitville, as well as, many of our awesome AFHS families.  We all enjoyed a little taste of 'normal' that morning, even though we wore masks and practiced our social distancing!  Here are a few photos from the event.  If you are interested in sponsoring an event please reach out to us!

"MONEY MAKERS"
Considering the unprecedented circumstances we are all facing, I want to personally thank all of our Freshmen Families who stopped by our tent during their drive-through orientation and joined the PTSA and purchased spirit wear.  Even though it was smokin' hot out, being able to actually see students and their families made it totally worth it!  We still have spirit wear available online HERE.  Grab a hoodie or a long-sleeved Tee. . .it's bound to cool off sooner or later!  You can also purchase PTSA memberships & make donations there as well.

You can always link your Harris Teeter VIC cards, Publix & Lowes cards.  It's a very simple way to help us earn money when you shop!

PTSA MEETING

Our next PTSA meeting is scheduled for September 21 at 6:30. All upcoming meeting dates and
information can be found HERE. We invite you to join us!

Who should register?

  • The PSAT allows 11th grade students the opportunity to potentially qualify for a National Merit scholarship if they receive a very high score (generally the top 1%). For this reason, WCPSS is offering the test free of charge to students who have a weighted GPA of 4.3125 and above.
  • 9th, 10th or 11th graders that want an idea of what you will need to succeed in college.
  • Students who have not completed Math 1 (Algebra 1) should not register for the PSAT.

#BeThe1To
Ask the tough question
When somebody you know is in emotional pain, ask them directly: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

#BeThe1To
Keep Them Safe
Is your friend thinking about suicide? Ask if they’ve thought about how they would do it and separate them from anything they could use to hurt themselves.

#BeThe1To
Be There
If your friend is thinking about suicide,
Listen to their reasons for feeling hopeless and in pain.
Listen with compassion and empathy and without dismissing or judging.

#BeThe1To
Help Them Connect
Help your friend connect to a support system, whether it’s 800-273- TALK(8255), family, friends, clergy, coaches, co-workers or therapists, so they have a network to reach out to for help.

#BeThe1To
Follow Up
Check in with the person you care about on a regular basis. Making contact with a friend in the days and weeks after a crisis can make a difference in keeping them alive.
And thank you to all of our sponsors....
