September 2020

Dear Family Room community,
In these times, families are carrying more weight than ever to raise their children; health and safety of their family, job and food insecurity, balancing school protocols, anxiety of sniffling noses and playing the role of parent and teacher (not to mention keeping track of the thermometer, hand sanitizer and everyone’s mask!).

Although much of our on site programming is on hold for now, we continue to do our best to support families with these emerging needs. We continue to support over 100 families with food, diapers, masks and other supplies on a weekly basis, we continue to make social connections with parents and are doing driveway visits to see many of our families in person, staff have begun doing traveling playgroups where we go to different communities to read, sing, connect and share giveaways of produce and other supplies.

I want to give a special big shout out of appreciation to the Family Rom staff, who are juggling many of the same challenges, for their incredible flexibility and dedication to supporting families.

Things look a bit different than what we are used to, but our mission is the same. Thank you to all of the contributions of our volunteers, interns, Board of Directors and donors who keep us going and allow us to be there for families when they need us most.

Announcements and Updates

Welcome two new staff members: Long-time Family Room volunteer and friend Nuriya Mohamed, and Dayva Savio.

“Healthy Families from the Start”  is our new prenatal program, coordinated by Dayva.  It is a support and educational program engaging families from pregnancy up through the first twelve weeks postpartum who have been identified as being at risk for postpartum mood disorders (PPMDs). Our focus will be on normalizing and building awareness of PPMDs while using assessment tools for early detection. Families can work with us as enrolled members of this program, as needed case-by-case, and fathers and non-custodial parents can get support through our fatherhood program, strong families, or traveling playgroups.  This is supported by a 2-year grant from the Canaday Family Foundation.

We are continuing to distribute food to families in our community and have teamed up with the Diggers Mirth for farm fresh, culturally appropriate produce for families. We have generous financial and logistical support from AALV for this project.  Food boxes are peppered with diapers from the Diaper Bank and fresh gleaned produce from Vermont farms, including the Intervale Community Farm, thanks to the Vermont Food Bank Gleaning program.

Preschool is up and running with 2 classes: An on-site program, continuing with 6 of last years families for their pre-kindergarten year, and a distance program supporting at-home learning and development for 10 additional families, by delivering comprehensive weekly bags with materials for off-screen learning fun.

We have new board members to welcome! Thank you for joining us Mick Leddy, Cathleen Kelley, and Brooke McFarlin.

The New American Pediatric Health Clinic, in collaboration with the UVM Medical Center has started again here on-site on Tuesdays.

Eid al-Fitr also called the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.  The Family Room is now recognizing this as a paid holiday.

Rally for Change! Make sure to ask to "round up" at the register when you shop at City Market Coop. The Family Room will benefit from 40% of these donations in October.
