Dear <<First Name>>,

Thank you for reading Dr. Jon's September Adventure Newsletter!

Thought of the month:The Ability to Endure

Other Topics:
Camping in the Wind River Range, WY.  This was the amazing lake, view, and peaceful evening awaiting us on the other side of a long, grueling trek that day.

The Ability to Endure

Summer is coming to an end and kids are going back to school online or in a restricted way while this pandemic and it’s social limitations drag on.

Professional, college, and youth sports have been altered, postponed, or canceled.  Protests and civil unrest persist in many cities.

Back in the spring, we didn’t know how we’d get through a few weeks of this pandemic, and yet here we are 6 months later, persevering.

While I know life is tough in many ways for so many of us, including me, I also know we will get through it because we have...

The Ability to Endure

This idea comes from a book by Michael Chitwood (endurance athlete and founder of Team World Vision).  One thing God has given all of us is an ability to endure, way more than we think we are capable of.  We have before and we will again.

Michael also relates how usually on the other side of suffering there is something greater in store for us.

I find metaphors for life in the mountains.  In early August I did a 4 day, 95 mile backpacking trip around Mt. Rainier on the Wonderland Trail, and last week I completed a 65 mile traversing mountain climbing trip in the Wind River Range in Wyoming.

During  both of these trips, my group had to endure long, grueling climbs, sometimes in the heat, sometimes in the wind and rain, only to come out on top or through a pass to beautiful views of a mountain lake, a large glacier, a bear, or views of mountains many miles away.  We were often far from civilization, remote, and far removed from the real world.

On the Wind River Range trip, we started on well-maintained trails with a challenging climb up through a 12,000 foot pass and were rewarded with a quick descent toward some beautiful mountain lakes where we saw not another soul. We were exhausted after 20 miles, but the reward of being at Upper Golden Lake was amazing!

On day two we had to go off trail and had three mountain passes to navigate and traverse. The winds were strong all day and the route finding was difficult. However, we passed five different mountain lakes and each time the color of the water and the remoteness was so idyllic that it made us feel like we were in Patagonia.

These tough moments remind me of a quote from legendary football coach Vince Lombardi:

“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything.  It's your mind you have to convince.”

The last two days we climbed the third highest mountain in Wyoming (Fremont 13,745') and traversed across three more passes. Most of the time the trails were in good condition which made us appreciate how challenging the second day was when we had no trail to follow. After that, a snowstorm came in and blasted us for the entire third afternoon of our journey.  We were wet, cold, hungry and a bit beaten down, but kept a positive attitude and were treated with a spectacular campsite the final evening along a green and teal river with yet another amazing view but the We had endured and felt satisfaction knowing how far we had come.

Sometimes the unknown can be super rewarding and how you face the day with an open mind and positive mental attitude will help you take apart your journey piece by piece.  Remember:

"What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales in comparison to what lies inside of you."  - Ralph Waldo Emerson

How about you? What is something hard you have endured?  Please reply to me (dr.jonked@gmail.com) and share with me your story of what you have endured.

I would like to share a few of your stories in my next newsletter (it can be anonymous if you wish) so we can inspire each other.  Because we all have inspiring stories to tell!

Happy Trails,
Dr. Jon

Zoom-ing into the Mountains

Most of us are now frequent users of Zoom / Google Meet / etc for school, business meetings, and more. Are you interested in using video conferencing to entertain and motivate your staff, your youth group, or your athletic team?

I have a fun talk called “Weathering the Storms” that combines entertaining stories from some of my climbing projects with lessons learned that can inspire your team to weather this current pandemic storm and prepare for when it ends.  As former NFL player Ted Anderson once said,

“You don't get to choose when opportunity is going to knock, so you better be prepared for it when it does.”

I’ll be giving this talk via webinar in September to several groups including the IL Parks and Recreation Department, several corporate entities,  and also some Boy Scout troops and other youth organizations.  Please contact me at dr.jonked@gmail.com if you are interested or pass along my information to any decision maker you know who might be.  Thanks!

What is Your Dream Fitness Challenge?

The pandemic has affected my business significantly.  The travel restrictions have altered how I can run my business (for example, doing webinars instead of live events).  Fortunately, mountain climbing and backpacking are already physically distanced activities so we can partake in them fairly normally right now, we just have to be creative in coming up with challenges that are close to home.

What about you?  Do you dream of climbing a 14er, or a Cascade Volcano, or maybe running an ultramarathon or completing a multiday backpacking adventure?

Here’s how I can help you.
  1. I can customize a training plan for your strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you are a strong climber but struggle with long descents.  I can design a plan to help you become a stronger and more confident in your area of weakness.
  2. You do not have to live in a mountainous area to train to climb mountains.  I can devise workouts even for those who live at sea level in flat places like Florida or Indiana.
  3. I’m also available to meet with you in person for ½ day or day long excursions in the mountains to assess your weaknesses and strengths and lead you up your goal or adventure.

Upcoming Adventures

Currently it’s uncertain what the short term future holds for international travel, but I am targeting taking a group to Everest Base Camp in April 2021, and then after that will be leading a small team climbing Mt. Everest from the north side.

There are a few spots left to join our Everest Base Camp Trek team.  Click here for pictures and more details on this bucket list trip!
