Seeing Student Work Online

Many teachers have been wrestling with how to have students show their work during distance learning. Of course, students can certainly upload a photo of their paper/pencil work into Schoology. But if you are looking for ways to view live student work in the moment, here are a few strategies to consider.

Desmos

The sketch feature in Desmos is a great way to have students who their work. Desmos has ready-made whiteboards for capture student work which can be used as-is or embedded into your own activities. Teachers might also use the sketch feature in assignments or assessments like this:

Google Jamboard

Google Jamboard is a virtual whiteboard students can write on individually or collaboratively. Students can then share a link with you to let you view their work. Here is an example of an individual Jamboard.

Mathcasts

Mathcasts are screen recordings of a student's written work and voice as they solve a math problem/task and explain their thinking. I have found mathcasts to be one of the best formative assessment tools I have ever used in my own classroom, hands down.

My go-to tools for students to create mathcasts are Screencastify and Loom. Both have a free version but Loom now offers free pro subscriptions for educators and students. I like free. :) Loom is the tool I used to create videos for this newsletter.

Google Slides

One tool for viewing all student work in the moment is to share a Google Slides with your class with a separate slide for each student. Students can then use the 'scribble' tool to write on their slide and show their work to solve the problem. View this video to see how use Google Slides to capture student work.

Elementary Math Updates

Updates to ThinkCentral

ThinkCentral has made some changes, and NSD elementary teachers now have access to 4 programs:
  • Math Expressions (this is the 2013 version we're used to)
  • Math Expressions 2018
  • Math Expressions SP (2013 version in Spanish)
  • Math Expressions Spanish 2018
You can change which program you view using the dropdown at the top right.

Need an account? Please submit a helpdesk request or email Patty for a ThinkCentral account.

Secondary Math Updates

NEW Desmos Feature - Manage Classes

Desmos Collections

Desmos has curated collections of activities that are well suited to asynchronous, distance learning:

I have also created many of my own collections so if you are looking for a Desmos activity for a particular topic, please email me and I'll see what I can find or create for you!

Teacher Support

Teachers are invited to book a virtual meeting with Patty for K-12 Math support. Some ways I may be able to provide support include:
  • meet with groups of teachers to learn about the math instructional priorities for 2020-2021,
  • provide resources and/or technology support for a particular lesson or topic,
  • participate in math department planning sessions,
  • plan a math lesson with a teacher or a team,
  • participate in your math PLC.
If I can support your work with students or your department, please don't hesitate to ask!
