WORLD OVERDOSE DAY RAISES AWARENESS OF OVERDOSE AND STIGMAS OF A DRUG-RELATED DEATH
In commemoration of World Overdose Day, 31 August 2020, and in remembrance of all those who had passed away due to an overdose, the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Urban Futures Centre (UFC) in collaboration with the Bellehaven Memorial Centre in Durban, held an evening vigil to remember and raise awareness of those who have passed on due to an overdose.
International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on 31 August every year and its goal is to raise awareness of overdose, spreads the message that overdose death is preventable, and lessen the stigma of a drug-related death.
DUT COMMITS TO SUPPORTING FEMALE STUDENTS PASSIONATE ABOUT TECHNOLOGY
In closing off the Women’s Month projects, the Durban University of Technology in collaboration with Varsity Genie hosted a virtual discussion on the Women in Technology: Support for Students on Microsoft Teams on Friday afternoon, 28 August 2020.
Female students who are eager to leave a mark in the technology industry had an opportunity to present at this webinar. The presenters consisted of the recently appointed Ambassador for Google’s Women Techmakers (WTM) Programme Nombuso Msweli, Londiwe Mncwango, Samukelisiwe Zulu, Lablonde Kalalizi and S’thabile Hlangu.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ALUMNA, MOJELA SHINES IN MALE-DOMINATED INDUSTRY
The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Mechanical Engineering Alumna, Lelau Mojela (30) is fascinated by being the only female in her department at Sumitomo Rubber South Africa, the manufacturer of the Dunlop tyre brand in Ladysmith.
Mojela who completed her National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at DUT in 2012 joined Sumitomo as a Process Engineer in 2017. Speaking about her department that designs and manufactures tyres from scratch, Mojela said she is the only female working with five males.

DUT WEBINAR TACKLES INEQUALITY, PATRIARCHY, AND INTERSECTIONALITY
The Umtapo Centre and Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted a webinar which addressed topics pertaining to Inequality, Patriarchy, and Intersectionality on Friday, 28 August 2020.
The Umtapo Centre is a social justice organisation whose mission is to engage in education, training, community mobilisation, and networking in order to empower people, particularly youth, to take control of their own lives in the struggle for sustainable development, peace, and human rights. With the context of the webinar looking at patriarchal societies, race, class, and gender, speakers Carolina Enriquez and Dr Matome Kganakga were invited to analyse the themes and give more insight into the struggle to eradicate all forms of oppression as well as the role men play in today’s society.
