Message from the Principal

Week One Complete

With a week under our belts, I hope people are feeling as grateful as I am for what we have here. There was so much joy in the building as Zooms began, student faces filled the screens and voices filled the rooms.  Given the circumstances, it has truly been a great first week.  A few bumps in the road are normal during the first week of school. I know there were some days that felt light but, there is more time to solidify routine, more time for play, more time for rest as students get back into shape for learning.  I can assure you that teachers are following schedules and planning as they normally would, working very hard to do what is best for students.

Recently, I saw the heartbreaking post that went viral  - two students sitting in the parking lot of a Taco Bell, trying to use the wifi there as a hotspot to complete their online learning.  Even more heartbreaking that there are students who can’t even do that and are missing out on school altogether as another year is underway.  Seeing this made me more grateful for what we have here at ASB and, even more importantly, more conscious of how we react to challenges.  There are frustrations or annoyances…and then there are real struggles.

Heading into the three-day weekend, I hope everyone is able to unplug, unwind, and enjoy time with your families. We look forward to “seeing” everyone back on Tuesday for week two of our school year!

With gratitude,

Kathleen Conklin

Principal

Announcements

Materials Pick Up - Today!

Grades K-5th, don’t forget to pick up learning materials today before 3:30PM.  We will follow a very similar procedure as last week with tables outside. You do not need to sign up this week. You can just pick them up throughout the day.  1st - 5th grades can pick up materials in the main parking lot.  Kindergarten materials pick up will be at St. Bridget Church.

Filming Live Instruction

Beginning next week, Zoom direct instruction will be filmed and made available to students via our private, protected learning platforms.  This has been requested by the Office of Catholic Schools in order to ensure access to all and allow students to go back to instruction as needed for clarity and understanding.  These recordings will focus on teacher instruction, but there will be times that students ask and answer questions.  These will not be posted publicly in any way.  If you do not want your child to be in the recorded session, please complete the form HERE and we will contact you with the options available.

Facts Family Portal

FACTS SIS is the new student portal, we are no longer using ALMA.  All families need to set up their family portal account in order to access student grades and information.  Please follow the instructions HERE to set up your account.

Curriculum Night

Curriculum Nights are coming up! PK-5th grades is Wednesday, September 9th and 6th-8th grades is Wednesday, September 16th.  There will be two options for joining a Zoom session with your child’s homeroom teacher.  Please keep in mind that this is time for the teachers to give an overview of the curriculum, how learning happens at that particular grade level, and important information.  Any questions regarding reopening of school timelines or schoolwide procedures should be directed to Principal Conklin.

Athletics

Soccer

CYO has officially canceled the 2020 soccer season for grades 4th-8th.   For grades K-3, CYO is planning on holding a spring soccer season that will run in April and May.  The decision to cancel the soccer season was not easy and it is not made without much research and guidance from local entities.

ASB will be issuing refunds to families that have registered for soccer.  There are currently three options available for each family:

  1. Apply the registration payment to your tuition for 20-21 (preferred).  Should you choose this option, no further action is needed to have the CYO Soccer registration fee moved to FACTS as a tuition credit for your child.

  2. Donate your registration fee to ASB Athletics, please email Dylan Pouley.

  3. Receive a refund check from ASB School (this is not the preferred method of reimbursement, but will be considered on a case by case basis).  Please email Dylan Pouley.

Thank you so much to all those that have already volunteered to serve as coaches, or team coordinators.

Cross Country - Virtual

CYO is making plans to continue Cross Country in a virtual format.  We are currently working out the details with CYO, and plan to have more information in the next few weeks.  There will be a small registration fee for this virtual season, and ASB will be offering a partial refund for the previously collected registration fees.

If your child(ren) is not interested in participating in a virtual track season, please contact
Dylan Pouley.  Refunds will be handled in the same way as soccer refunds, see above.

Faith & Service

Free Dress Food Drive - September 14th

Traditionally, ASB has a Free Dress Food Drive on the first Monday of each month to help stock the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry that is located at Assumption Parish. This food pantry is supported by the joint Assumption and St. Bridget St Vincent de Paul conferences. The pantry helps to feed families with food insecurities in our own neighborhoods.  Families are invited to participate by bringing non-perishable food items, toiletries and cleaning supplies to help stock the pantry.

Since March we have pivoted to a drive by food drive to keep the social distancing in place, but allow all of us to continue the mission of feeding the hungry and helping the homeless.

Please drop off any of the following items on Monday, September 14th from 11:00AM - 1:00PM infront of Assumption Church on 33rd.  Volunteers will take your donations from your car.

Children's Choir

We are so excited and happy to have found a creative, constructive, and safe way to continue to offer Children’s Choir at Assumption Parish during this season of remote learning. Parish Youth in Grades 1st - 8th are invited to join our Virtual Choir!  Choir members will receive a weekly private voice tutorial from Children’s Choir Director Julie Olsen via Zoom.  Our goals?  To be sure that we continue to learn healthy singing techniques, continue to grow together in our love of God and our love of music, continue to build leadership skills--and prepare to eventually lead music at mass.  If you love singing—in a group or by yourself--love making beautiful harmonies with your friends, and want to learn more about singing beautifully, then Children’s Choir is the place for you! Share your gifts and your love of music while you grow in faith, connection to others, and understanding of liturgy!  Sign up HERE.  For more information, please contact Assumption Parish Children’s Choir Director Julie Olsen.

NEW!  Adult Education Series on “The Mass”

The Mass has been called the source and summit of our Catholic faith.  Beginning Wednesday, September, 2nd at 7:15PM, St. Bridget’s is hosting an engaging video-based study that will provide a deeper understanding of the Mass and why it matters. Word on Fire video presentations by Bishop Robert Barron will automatically be emailed to parishioners. Watch them on your own time and then join us for weekly Zoom discussions to talk about what we’ve learned.   Non-parishioners can register to receive videos by contacting Carla Loucks .

Incoming 2nd & 7th Graders
Students in 2nd & 7th grades are invited to become more fully initiated into the Catholic faith.  Second graders are invited to prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion, while 7th grade is now the year to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation.  We are putting together engaging programs that will involve some e-Learning as well as the potential for in-person gatherings.  Details and registration information will be coming soon!
