Facebook Update from The Vernon Newcomers Club.
The Club was gaining some fast and furious momentum at the beginning of this year with member-exclusive events and gatherings and the future looked bright for VNC. And then, well, you know…covid. And yes, that has certainly impacted our ability to program social gatherings with any degree of certainty, but it hasn’t stopped the work behind the scenes. The Board of Directors has been continually monitoring and assessing the current public health guidelines and regulations while continuing to work on the business of our new association (bylaws, insurance, etc.). The Board continues to meet monthly and brainstorm ideas for new events when it’s permissible and responsible to resume the activities of a social club.  To learn more about the Club and stay up-to-date on activities, please visit their Facebook Page

Learn how to communicate using inclusive language with this new guide.

Inclusive language is essential in creating safer environments for employees and all community members we engage with. Culturally safe, trauma informed and equitable language, composed of words, terms, and phrases, aims to address all people in a productive and respectful manner.

A newly released guide from the BC Centre for Disease Control aims to assist with COVID19 messaging and content development by using positive, acknowledging, and inclusive, rather than (potentially) stigmatizing language that may provoke fear.  The scope of these guidelines is for COVID-19 content development, written or digital materials, and when updating existing resources in an effort to make new and existing content more inclusive and non-stigmatizing.

One Community and OneWorld Video --

Please read before viewing....

The South Okanagan Immigrant & Community Services recently completed a video on diversity in the South Okanagan Similkameen region.  The purpose of the video is to demonstrate our strength in our diversity as One Community and OneWorld.
Please be aware that this video may be upsetting.
We, therefore, include this **Trigger Warning**

The discrimination and polarizing comments heard at the start of the video are of actual incidences in Canada – not someone else’s "backyard".
