A drive-through celebration is planned for Sunday, September 13 to celebrate Mary Claire Van der Horst’s 90th birthday, an icon of UUCJ. Here is the plan: Jeannie Heubner and Timothy Edwards will at Mary’s house at 3:30 to serenade her as she is escorted outside by her son David, who knows about this. Then at 4:00 pm, we will begin our drive-through by entering her driveway, giving her our best wishes, and making a “U” to exit. The passenger side of the car will be facing Mary Claire should you want to place any signs or decorations. There will also be a table nearby should you wish to place a small gift or remembrance. We will meet at 3:45 at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church at 5644 Trout River Blvd., which is a short distance away from Mary Claire, and on the same side of the street to line up and commence the drive-through. Note: There is only one entrance and exit to the driveway, so we will have to take turns coming in and going out. Social distancing will be practiced. If you would like to participate and get Mary’s address, please email Donna Janesky at janesky40@comcast.net. Hope you can make it.

Jennifer Wolfe is a writer, facilitator, business owner, and community leader who’s been helping to facilitate change for people and organizations for the past 25 years. She’s also been keeping a journal since the age of 10. A journalist by training and a rabble rouser by nature, she’s the founder and executive director of Women Writing for (a) Change® Jacksonville. Through her work in the community, she attempts to leverage her skills to help others who want to use writing as a tool for their own personal growth, creative expression, and self-directed change. She also uses it as a way to create more conscious, connected communities. In addition to holding regular classes at her home, Jennifer conducts many programs in the community to ensure writing circles are accessible to a wide, diverse audience. She’s especially pleased to facilitate writing circles for incarcerated women at the Community Transition Center. She also hosts two arts shows a year in her historic home featuring many local women artists. Last year her organization produced an annual anthology of local women’s voices, continuing a publishing tradition that was started by poets at this church some 30 years ago. Jennifer’s been a member of this church since 2005, serving on the ministerial search committee, the religious services committee, and as a worship associate. A social entrepreneur and a ukulele fan, she’s also reared two children, kept a journal, written a blog, started a Happiness Project, launched a recycling program, and tended her native garden. She’s grateful to this, her church community, and all the people who serve it, for providing this lovely spiritual home for all of us.
We usually start ordering materials for our ‘Guest At Your Table’ campaign in September. We know there will be no coin boxes, pamphlets, and cards, but do we want to keep the chocolate sales? The Fair Exchange chocolates serve two purposes- money raised for the UUSC and money for small farmers. Cyd Reider is willing to deliver bags of chocolates if you order $10 (50 pieces of 55% dark chocolate). Or we can just wait until next year and send donation checks. Send your thoughts: cydreider@aol.com
There are a lot of studies about the effects of gratitude. People who practice gratitude have a more positive outlook for the future and they complain of less physical ailments. It impacts the body as well as the mind. You should use a separate journal or notebook and write down three things that you are grateful for or that brought you joy. It is a great way to end your day. Doing this consistently engenders a habit of looking for the good. And on those bad days—we all have them—you can pick up this book and look at the good in your life. It’s documented!
