Single-cell sequencing access grants

Single-cell sequencing is revolutionising many areas of research in molecular and cell biology.  The CTBMB is partnering with AGRF to offer heavily subsidised access to this technology for up to four pilot research projects.  The aim of this access grant program is to lower the barrier to entry for researchers by providing pilot data that can be used as proof of concept and capability in grant proposals.  Although our priority with this initial round of grants is data generation we hope to follow up in the future with training opportunities in data analysis.

For more information on how to prepare and submit a grant please visit our grants web page.

Applications close 1st November 2020
Webinar on single-cell sequencing

In support of our single-cell sequencing access grants our partners at AGRF will be hosting a webinar on the technology.  This webinar will include essential information on sample preparation and preservation techniques for those wishing to prepare an access grant.

The webinar will be held over zoom on the 14th of October.  Full details including a zoom link and time will be announced soon.

In addition, the following link provides access to a downloadable recording of our earlier webinar featuring 10x technology expert Leo Chan http://bit.ly/leochan10x
ABACBS National Seminar Series

The Australian Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Society (ABACBS) has started a national seminar series.   Talks are held from 12-1pm Eastern Australian time on the third Tuesday of each month via Zoom.   Each session features two talks of around 25 minutes each.

Full details are available on the series web page.

BioInfoSummer and ABACBS Conferences are online only

BioInfoSummer and the ABACBS national conference are two of the biggest events of the year for bioinformaticians and computational biologists.  This year both conferences have gone virtual which means that these events are now much more accessible (and cheap).

Those interested in single-cell sequencing should definitely check out the program for BioInfoSummer which features training in analysis of single-cell sequencing data.

View the program and register for BioInfoSummer at https://bis.amsi.org.au/

Full details of the ABACBC virtual conference can be found at https://www.abacbs.org/conference2020
More Online Training Opportunities through QCIF

QCIF have moved all of their training online as a response to the pandemic.  This is a great opportunity as registration is free for staff and research students at QCIF member institutions (JCU is a member).

This includes training in advanced bioinformatics analysis, data processing and statistics, programming as well as survey design and data management.  For a full list of upcoming training and to sign up for the mailing list visit

https://www.qcif.edu.au/training/training-courses/

Webinars from Australian Biocommons

Australian BioCommons have a great line-up of webinars over the next few months on genome assembly, reproducible analysis with Galaxy, BioNix and plant genomics.

The full list is available on their website

R Communities in Cairns and Townsville

Cairns: Experienced and aspiring R users are very welcome. We meet on Mondays at 12 via Zoom .  Please contact Martha Cooper (martha.cooper@my.jcu.edu.au) or Olivia Rowley (olivia.rowley@jcu.edu.au) for more information

Please contact Martha Cooper (martha.cooper@my.jcu.edu.au) or Olivia Rowley (olivia.rowley@jcu.edu.au) for more information”

Townsville: Townsville’s R community started in 2019 inspired by the group in Cairns.  We meet Mondays at 11 on Zoom.  New members are encouraged to join the slack channel for updates (https://coder-tsv.slack.com/), follow the group on twitter (https://twitter.com/codertsv) and check the group website https://codertsv.github.io/ for access to past presentations.  If you’d prefer not to use Slack please contact Chloe Boote (chloe.boote@my.jcu.edu.au) and ask to be added to the email list.
Hacky Hour

The aim of Hacky Hour is to help researchers (staff and research students) with research-related IT problems.  It’s free, informal and all researchers/helpers are welcome to drop into the Slack space for advice or offer their IT expertise to help others.

Popular topics for discussion include:
·         high-performance computing (HPC),
·         cloud computing,
·         general programming,
·         R,
·         Python,
·         Linux,
·         data processing,
·         data storage; and
·         data management.

The channel will also have information on upcoming training, workshops and events.

Anyone who is interested in joining and/or helping out, please come along and introduce yourself:

Journal Club

Journal Club is an informal discussion of current papers on population genetics, genomics, microbiome, proteomics, eDNA and anything else related to DNA and its applications!

Every second week a person selects a paper (preferably recently published) that would like to discuss and emails it to the group so the rest have time to read it before JC. That person would start introducing the methods and results of the paper and then we all discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study. It is a great opportunity to talk about new ideas and/or methods and how we could incorporate them into our own research in a friendly, “no pressure” environment.

The current Journal Club convenor is Cecilia Villacorta-Rath.  If you would like to join please send her an email on cecilia.villacortarath@jcu.edu.au .  This will ensure that you receive Journal Club emails

Come join us every second Friday of the month on zoom.  To receive emails with fortnightly zoom links please sign up to the mailing list.
