Stories about the food we don't eat...
Today is the inaugural United Nations International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. To celebrate this day, we are pleased to announce new projects in our REDUCE and TRANSFORM programs:
Projects
Australia’s apple and pear juicers squeeze about 110,000 tonnes of fruit each year and are left with over 30,000 tonnes of pomace/pulp by-product. Different businesses deal with this by-product in different ways, with the majority of processes being of no/low value. Before a business invests in transforming pomace they should be aware of the latest options.  Green Industries SA has commissioned SARDI, a division of the Department of Primary Industries and Regions, to update a report outlining these options for the apple and pear juicers. MORE>>

Australia's current tax framework is ineffective in ensuring food producers, food businesses and retailers are adequately motivated to donate surplus to food relief.  KPMG is working with Foodbank and Woolworths to highlight the potential to improve and extend tax incentives for the donation of food and associated services. They will develop a case for tax reform in Australia to encourage and support increased donation of surplus food by the food industry to food relief charities to assist people in need, thus reducing both food insecurity and food waste. MORE>>

The Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre, Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL), is working with leading international consultancies Edge Environment, WRAP, 3Keel and Lifecycles to better understand what will be required for Australia to meet its 50% food waste reduction target. The project is now at a stage where the project team would like to share some interim findings and highlight some specific areas of the supply chain where data confidence is currently quite low, and they are seeking the support of food companies and others to improve the quality and coverage of the data in the revised baseline.
