Dear <<First Name>>,

HIT THE BRICKS IS HERE, and it’s likely that most of you have no clue what Hit the Bricks is. That’s why I’m here!  Hit the Bricks is an annual fall fundraiser in which students form a team and run an 8-hour relay race around the quad to support cancer research! Due to Covid-19, things will look a little different this year, but in a good way - I promise! Before I go on, here is what you need to know!

  • What: Hit the Bricks 2020

  • When: Monday, September 28th through Thursday, October 1st

  • Where: Hit the Bricks will be a combination of in-person and virtual events

  • Events:

    • Running Challenge (a 4-day long distance running competition most similar to the traditional relay race)

    • Find the Brick (a daily scavenger hunt both on-campus and via social media)

    • Quiz the Bricks (a nightly trivia challenge where you can win monetary donations from our sponsor, Sonoco)

    • Sprint the Bricks (time trials)

  • What now?

    • Register here

    • Watch the How to Register video

    • Register by September 23rd

    • Cost: $20, which includes a HTB 2020 t-shirt! (Register early to guarantee a shirt)

  • Want to share a personal experience with cancer?

This fall, Hit the Bricks is transforming to a 4-day Walk/Run and Fundraising Challenge! You will register on our website, download an app called Strava, and join a club that HTB sends you. Each mile you track will count toward your team’s total miles. The team with the most miles wins!

“Wins what?” you might be thinking. You will get to take home your very own 2020 Hit The Bricks brick, and… your friends will be jealous. Just look at how happy past participants were to win a brick (see photo below)!

If you run fast but not far, come out to Sprint the Bricks on Wednesday. You will earn bonus points for speeding around the quad as fast as you can. You can also win a free class ring for being the fastest!

Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “I don’t like to run, but I want to be involved.” Say no more!  Not only is there the Running Challenge, but we also have Find The Brick and Quiz the Bricks! Find the Brick is a 3-day, half-IRL, half-virtual scavenger hunt where finders really are keepers: if you find the brick (as the name implies), you keep it (and more awesome WF swag)! Each day one brick is hidden on campus and one on social media! Keep your eyes peeled!

Quiz the Bricks is next (and you don’t even have to study for it). Quiz the Bricks is a 10-minute game show where you can win money for your team for knowing things and answering quickly!  (I’ll give you a hint: Brian Piccolo played football here!)

Speaking of Brian Piccolo, let me tell you the most meaningful aspect of Hit the Bricks. While winning bricks and running far is fun, our main goal is to support cancer research. Many of us have either been personally affected by cancer or know someone who has. Hit the Bricks wants cancer to be a thing of the past, and the more donations we receive, the more funding there will be to find a cure. That is why I run. That’s why I pander my friends and family for donations -  because I want to live in a world free of cancer. I hope you do, too.  Here’s how you can:

  1. Register for Hit the Bricks here (hitthebricks.wfu.edu/). You can make a team with up to 15 of your friends, join with a club you are involved in, or just run by yourself under “Individual Participant.”

  2. Tell your friends to run, too! The more the merrier!. Ask those people in your life if they would be willing to donate toward you and your team.  Tell them why and for whom you are running.

  3. Buy a $5 luminary in honor of those for whom you run here (go.wfu.edu/HTBLuminaries).

  4. From Sept. 28 - Oct. 1, run your heart out.  Rack up those miles. Get on that leaderboard. I believe in you!

  5. Look out for those Bricks, and get ready for Quiz the Bricks!

Those who run the most miles or raise the most money will be invited to attend our closing ceremony where we honor all those for whom we run. This is the most memorable part of Hit the Bricks, so I encourage you to work hard to secure a spot at the closing ceremony!

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me or my co-directors below. We look forward to seeing you Hit the Bricks!
