Although the Computing Sciences Area canceled its on-site summer research program, many students were able to gain valuable research experience through virtual, remote collaborations.

Reva Jambunathan Wins 2020 SLAM

CRD postdoc Revathi Jambunathan took first place in the annual Berkeley Lab research SLAM with her presentation on simulating pulsar stars using WarpX and AMReX, codes developed at Berkeley Lab.

Mekena Metcalf explores quantum algorithms to simulate quantum mechanical systems on quantum computers. Her spare-time activities, however, are a lot more down to earth.

NERSC Hosts Virtual GPU Hackathon

Like most conferences and workshops taking place this year, the recent GPU hackathon hosted by NERSC was a fully virtual affair that served as an innovative model for what could be the next generation of HPC hackathons.

The Computing Sciences Area boasts two finalists for the 2020 R&D100 Awards: the ESnet Portal and the IDAES Process Systems Engineering Framework. Winners will be announced next week.
Applications are now open through November 6 for the Alvarez and Hopper Postdoctoral Fellowships in Computing Sciences.
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking researchers interested in the intersection of public policy and science for year-long fellowships with Congress (Dec. 15 deadline) or the State Department (Oct. 15 deadline).
If you haven't yet, please take 5 minutes to respond to the CS Area's Late Summer Check-in Survey for staff. It closes at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, September 23. Responses are anonymous and a reminder email was sent this morning.
