Updates from the HFFI Office

This summer, Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. said a bittersweet goodbye to Sandra Erickson, who had served as director of operations for the organization since 2017.  In early September 2020, Gretchen Goodell Pendleton joined the HFFI team.  We are so grateful to Sandra for her steadfast dedication to HFFI's mission and her commitment to the organization's members, volunteers, and friends.  We wish her and her family all the best in their new adventures!

Dear Members, Volunteers, and Friends of HFFI,

As you may have heard, my family recently relocated. We will be returning to Fredericksburg in a couple of years and are looking forward to seeing all of you again. I learned so much about Fredericksburg by being at HFFI and it gives me a deeper appreciation for our city. We made quantifiable improvements over the past 3 years as an organization and I am proud of that. It was a joy getting to know so many of you. Thank you for the time, resources, and energy you dedicate to HFFI.

Gretchen and I have been spending time together as I virtually train her on the Director of Operations position. What a great hire! Her knowledge and skills will be an asset to HFFI. I can’t wait for you to meet her.

One of my major projects prior to leaving was to initiate a revised plan for Candlelight Tour. We conducted outreach to the community about decorating for this event and the response has been overwhelmingly positive and heartwarming. The tour is coming together through the hard work of our fabulous Working Group. I can’t wait to come back to Fredericksburg in December to take the tour myself!

Gretchen has my contact information if you would like to keep in touch. Stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,
Sandra Erickson

50th Annual Candlelight Tour
We are happy to report that over 130 properties will be decorating for our 50th Annual Candlelight Tour! This makes it the biggest Candlelight Tour ever. Wow! Fredericksburg is going to look so magical this holiday season.

This event is designed to be a safe option for your whole family.
All you have to do is:

1)    Go to the hffi.org/shop website and purchase a downloadable 2020 Candlelight Tour ticket.
(If you are an HFFI Supporting Level Member or higher, you will receive an email with your unique tour code prior to December 1.)
2)    Download the HFFI Tours app for free from the app store on your mobile device.
3)    Enter your email and code listed on your event ticket to access the tour content.
4)    Enjoy the tour any time in the month of December!

Tickets are good for one device, so can likely comfortably accommodate a small group of up to four.  Additional tickets can be purchased for additional devices.  Candlelight Tour ticket prices range from $20 (nonmember) to $17 (member).  Tickets go on sale in early November -- keep an eye on Facebook or our website for further details.

All decorated properties and select neighborhoods will be marked on the mobile app map.  Each stop will include a brief written summary, some with additional photos or audio clips, so you can walk or drive around town to check them out at your leisure. Additionally, the Darbytown neighborhood, where the original Candlelight Tour began back in 1971, will also include extra old photos and interesting audio clips to provide a more detailed history of this area of town and its connection to the very first annual tour.

In August, HFFI sent letters to property owners in Fredericksburg to ask if they would decorate the exterior of their homes for Candlelight Tour and we were incredibly overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response.  We cannot wait to see you around town for this unique community experience.

NANCY GASPAROVIC:  An Appreciation

HFFI’s Board – as well as many others in Fredericksburg’s non-profit world – were stunned and deeply saddened by the passing last month of our 2019 Volunteer of the Year, Nancy Hardin Gasparovic.  She was the embodiment of the “volunteer” concept and an ardent supporter of HFFI along with many other local organizations.

Nancy had moved here five years ago from Southern Maryland where, we now know, she also preached the idea of ‘support your community organizations’.

Of her many interests beyond our orbit, the arts – especially music and theater – were her love.  She was particularly active in the ArtsAlive group but also gave full support to the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts by housing many of the out-of-town equity actors appearing in their shows.  Most prominent, of course, was Sally Struthers.  Everyone enjoyed “Nancy G’s” hospitality and lively personality.  She didn’t just loan her house to cast members, though.  She also permitted extensive use of her riverfront back yard as the site of magnificent fundraisers, particularly for the Friends of Chatham, who could relax at Nancy’s and gaze up at the magnificent edifice the group supports.

HFFI had use of her house, as well.  During her riverfront tenure, she allowed us to use her property for the Spring House Tour.  Speaking of tours, she was extremely active in planning committees for our holiday Candlelight Tour.  Living first by the river, she recently had moved and refurbished a property a half-block from the Lewis Store, so she was readily available to show up and help with a variety of activities.

While all of us in Fredericksburg hogged her energy, Nancy continued to travel, particularly to visit family, especially grandchildren, on both coasts.  Even from afar, she continued to remain tied to her new ‘hometown’ here on the Rappahannock.

Her sudden passing midst of the conundrum of pandemic restrictions has meant we couldn’t gather to either mourn or celebrate.  But her departure has not meant she and her infectious, delightful, and vigorous life with us and for us has been forgotten.

For her, the Board of Directors has authorized the placement of a Memorial Brick on our front Walk of Honor.  We hope everyone – members and community residents – will pause and view that with knowledge of the fond memories we have of this wonderful person.

On behalf of the Board,
Scott Walker,  Vice President

Lewis Store Restoration
The historic Lewis Store building restoration continues to progress.  We hope to move forward very soon with plaster work in the front room, where you may recall we had to replace the building's summer beam.  Well, the ceiling will soon be repaired and replastered, and updated paint and other repairs on the main level of the building are soon to follow.  The Lewis Store Task Force continues in their research and planning for the new interior space, which will provide community meeting and event space, retail space, as well as the recreation of an 18th-century store.

We thank our supporters who have given so generously toward this project, but funding is still needed.  If you would like to donate to the Lewis Store Restoration project, please reach out.

Additionally, we are planning to hold a community yard sale and silent auction at the Lewis Store on November 14, 2020.  Stop by for this indoor/outdoor sale and see the Lewis Store restoration progress in person. (Masks required inside the Lewis Store. All proceeds raised by this impromptu event will benefit he Lewis Store Restoration project.  Contact Terrie James at 540-845-8119 for more information.
