West Park isn't a park any more!   The foundations of the new building are taking shape now, where once there were towering honey locust trees and survivors from pioneer orchards.  We are promised that once construction of the new building is complete, and the current buildings removed, the grounds will again have grass and trees, hopefully with a connection to the valley!

Bonnick's Grocery Store
Many residents will remember the building at 1370 Weston Road, now occupied by Bonnick's, from its decades as the Pyoon Nyeon Oriental Food Market, heavily used by our area's once large Korean community. That closed in 2016, and there were unsuccessful attempts in 2018-19 to re-launch the property as the "Harvest Time Caribbean Supermarket".  The MDCA is hoping that Bonnick's will have more success, and encourages local residents to support it.

Environment Day  Sunday 27th
Hours and address details Here!
Although the Ingram Transfer station accepts hazardous waste during the week, the times are awkward for many people.  Environment Days expand on the range of services, and are on weekends when more people can attend.  So time to get rid of the toxics, and investigate sending reusables to new homes too!   Environment Day web page here

Work begins at the site of the new daycare centre, with sewer connections and excavation well under way.   An architects perspective here  The property, 1234 Weston Road at Glenvalley, was for many years home to the privately-operated Pinetree Daycare Centre.  The City of Toronto bought the land in 2017, and has since demolished the original building and developed plans for a new, much larger City-operated daycare centre  See page 2 of our Fall 2018 Newsletter (#18)  for an artist's rendering and an overview of what is planned. This recent photo shows excavation work underway for the new building.

Urban Arts Charity Auction
UrbanArts virtual and collaborative fundraiser the I Heart Neighbourhood Charity Auction scheduled for September 29th is fast approaching and we are seeking your generous support.  Please consider purchasing a ticket, making a donation, donating a silent auction item or offering a sponsorship.  Your continued support is greatly appreciated.  Please see here for details  https://tinyurl.com/IHeartAuction

Climate Action  The Mount Dennis ecoNeighbourhood Climate Action Plan started a series of events last winter, but COVID-19 has put them on hold.  So we are only now considering a possible outdoor event in spring or early summer.  If you registered, you will soon get an e-mail, and if not just drop us a line, climate@mountdennis.ca

Suggestions for home owners from BetterHomesTO.ca, has two publications, worth reviewing if you are considering renovations, hiring a contractor, or just want to see what's new.  Upgrade Cards   and the Whole House Guide  available for download.  Energy efficiency is good for your finances and good for the environment.

A College Campus - The Mount Dennis Economic Development studies have suggested a campus centred on the new station and surrounded commercial properties would be an asset, so Councillor Nunziata encouraged Toronto's Economic Development department to meet with us, and also with other interested people and organizations to see what could be done.  Currently we are trying to assemble a group that can develop a plan, and at the same time, locate an educational partner.  Since the first meetings about Crosstown, over ten years ago, there have been several meetings with educational institutions, but until the station construction nears completion, no one wanted to go beyond talk.  Now, we can actually talk about sites and dates, so if you can help, please email campus@mdencap.ca

The Jane Bus lane  MDCA is strongly in favour of RapidTO (the City’s bus lane initiative), and happy to see it implemented on Jane Street north of Eglinton.  We think bus lanes should be expanded throughout the city to help combat the reliance on single occupancy vehicles and the congestion and pollution that they cause. And based on our local understanding of traffic patterns at the Jane and Weston intersection, we are prepared to give City staff our opinion on how to make this bus lane as successful as it can possibly be.

 Police Liaison
For many years, 12 Division, at Black Creek and Trethewey, has hosted a Liaison Committee of residents, elected representatives, and organization reps.  Meeting on third Thursdays, September to May, plus some special events, this is a diverse group of people that reflects Ward 5, and discusses a range of issues where policing can help.  Discussion is lively at times, but it allows a lot of voices to be heard.  There have been some retirements and promotions at 12 Div, plus the complications of COVID-19, so the committee is only now resuming using an on-line forum.  You can learn more by visiting the 12 Division facebook page or by directly contacting

Join the committee!   Meet people and learn about what is actually happening on our streets.
