Fall BMP Reminders

Fall is here!

With little to no rain in July and especially August, many pastures have stopped growing. Remember not to overgraze, below two - three inches, as grass is vulnerable to damage this time of year. Healthy fall regrowth will encourage stronger growth in spring.

Fall is the best time of year to complete annual soil tests, reseed, and to spread nutrients (compost and manure). Here are a few tips:

  • Remember not to spread manure or compost right before a big rain event!
  • Be sure to plant or spread seed before October 15 for successful germination.
  • Typically it is not recommended to spread manure or compost after October 1
  • Avoid over application of material to reduce contaminated runoff when the heavy fall rains arrive.

Remember healthy spring pastures are made in the fall!

Wildfire Assistance Resources

Here are some resources to help farmers navigate the impacts of wildfire and smoke on animals and livestock

Farmland Access Strategic Initiative Project RFP

Help spread the word that KCD is currently requesting proposals for the Farmland Access Strategic Initiative. KCD seeks to identify a qualified consultant or team of consultants to lead and manage a comprehensive farmland access program in King County. This program will coordinate service providers to assist farmers in accessing land opportunities and connecting to technical assistance to get farmland into production. Visit kingcd.org/rfp to find out more information and learn more about the bid process. Deadline for bids is 5:00pm October 8, 2020.

Outside Agency News

Pierce Conservation District is coordinating a group purchase of cover crop seed for fall planting. It will be a mix of 40% common vetch and 60% cereal rye mix and will cost $0.85/pound.

For more information or to order cover crop seed, contact Ali Nichols, alisonn@piercecd.org or 253 845=9770.

Equipment Share Program

Update: Our loan program is up and running with new safety precautions in place. Senior farm planner, Jay Mirro, is currently dropping off and picking up each piece of equipment in order to minimize handling risk.

There are a few spots left for our poultry processing equipment for this fall. Book now for your reservation!

The following equipment is available for use for a fee. KCD charges a small fee for these items to cover the cost of maintenance and insurance.

And these tools are available for use for free:

  • Hay Probe - for testing animal forage nutritional levels
  • Weed Wrenches - for removing invasive weeds such as Scotch Broom
  • Soil Sampling Probes - for sampling your soil to submit to KCD’s Soil Nutrient Testing Program

Visit Equipment Share Program to check availability and rent or borrow any of the equipment.

Please keep in mind that scheduling and processes have changed due to COVID-19 orders and recommendations by our state and local health agencies.

Online Livestock Advisor Training

Begins September 23, 2020

The 10-week WSU Livestock Advisor Training course is now being offered state-wide beginning Septemer 23, 2020. Usually the program is in-person and only open to those who live in Skagit and Snohomish counties. There is usually a component of giving back 50 hours of volunteer time over two years to help sustain our program. However, for this training where many people have signed up from across the state that is not required. For those interested in volunteering down the road there are always opportunities.

Are you interested in raising livestock? Not sure how to begin? Do you dream of raising your family’s food providing the best care possible? The 10-week class brings a whole new dimension to providing fresh, locally grown healthy meat and poultry to your dinner table! Because the training is being offered via Zoom, WSU has decided to open it up to everyone who is interested regardless of where you live. WSU does as for a commitment to following the program through until the end. Each class will be recorded, so it’s possible to catch up if you have miss a night, but they do ask people to be as committed as possible.
