The 2020 Design Matters Conference: RADICAL TRANSFORMATION will now take place on December 3 and 4. Please mark your calendars.

Through a series of virtual talks, we will explore the public’s changing expectations of cultural institutions and demands to create equitable, sustainable cities—and the new thinking and approaches it may require of us all. During interactive small group discussions, attendees will wrestle with the pressing questions, nascent ideas, and operational challenges that can be best appreciated and investigated by their immediate colleagues from peer architecture organizations. If ever there were a year to bring your concerns to the floor, this is it!

A full program announcement, including our Open Call for Presenters, will be made in October. Read more about the 2020 Design Matters Conference.

Upcoming AAO Network Meetings for October

This fall, architecture organizations will be setting their 2021 budgets, and most of us will be projecting significant cuts that will affect programming, fundraising, and other essential functions. We invite top leaders of AAO member organizations to join us for our October 6 CEO Network meeting to discuss the unique challenges of scenario planning during the COVID-era. Register now for the October 6 meeting.

A similar meeting is being called by the Architecture + Design Education Network (A+DEN) to share educators’ initial thinking about what their program plans might look like for the first half of 2021. All educators are encouraged to join up for this October 5 “check-in.”

Virtual Open House and Doors Open Programs

This year, you can "attend" fall festivals all around the world on your preferred device. Here's a sampling of the Open House and Doors Open events from AAO members that are entirely virtual or a mix of in-person and online events:

Actions to Increase Diversity in Architecture

  • NOMA, with support from AIA Large Firm Roundtable, has authored the 2030 Diversity Challenge for Architecture, which aims to double the percentage of African American architects from 2% to 4% by 2030. This summer, the NOMA Foundation Fellowship took a step toward that goal and placed 30 NOMAS students in paid summer internships.
  • Beyond the Built Environment launched SAY IT WITH MEdia, a challenge for publications to feature BIPOC and women in at least 15% of their content. AAO Member Rice Design Alliance has made the commitment.
  • Design Museum's We Design online exhibition celebrates a range of career paths, emphasizes the need for more racial and gender diversity in design fields, and highlights the importance of equity and inclusion in terms of generating ideas.
  • The BSA's monthly Race and Architecture series started in July. View upcoming events and recordings of past programs.
  • RIBA's virtual Inclusion by Design Festival will take place Sept. 28 - Oct. 2.
