Louisianna Child Care Paren Poll 
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to hear from families with young children about their experiences and current needs for child care.

September 30th Day of Action for Safe, Healthy and Equitable Schools 

Thousands of parents, students, educators  and school staff that have been on the frontlines fighting for racial justice in the US public school system are joining forces on September 30th  to demand equity and safe conditions before schools are reopened. NOLA Public Schools Virtual Meetings

NOLA Public Schools Superintendent Lewis' contract renewed an extra year, some charters are approved, others won't get started. Check out the meeting documents here.
NOLA Public Schools will hold the following  meetings in the month of September

  • Board Meeting, October 22
The public may participate via Zoom video conference.

City Transitions Laura Evacuee Resource Center Management, Encourages Residents to Volunteer and Donate

The City of New Orleans encouraged residents to continue to provide donations and volunteer time to assist roughly 10,500 Hurricane Laura evacuees sheltering in New Orleans. Beginning last week, the administration of the Resource Center and donations management were transitioned to the United Way HandsOn Entergy Volunteer Center, a contractor of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. HandsOn continues to solicit donations and recruit volunteers. Read the full release here

Department Seeks Applications for Child and Adult Care Food Program Institutions

The Louisiana Department of Education's Division of Nutrition Support announced it is seeking applications from eligible institutions interested in administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a federally funded program that provides healthy, affordable meals to both children and adults. OPSB rolls forward property tax rate, adopts new process for charter approvals

The Orleans Parish School Board on Thursday approved a tax measure on its facilities fund property tax that will net an additional $1.7 million in revenues for capital repairs each year. And  NOLA Public Schools district staff explained how they are serving students and holding schools accountable during the COVID-19 era. Read the full story here.

Backpacks, masks and temperature checks: NOLA Public Schools’ youngest students return to the classroom

New Orleans public schools started virtually in August. But amid improving data on the city’s rate of infection, the NOLA Public Schools district allowed pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students back to campus this week. Older students remain at home to learn online and can return to campus in mid-October if health data allows. Read the full article here.

'I'm Only 1 Person': Teachers Feel Torn Between Their Students And Their Own Kids

Over the summer, NPR and Ipsos surveyed a national sample of teachers, and found that about half had children under 18 at home. Of those, 57% agreed with the statement: "I cannot properly do my job from home while also taking care of my children." Read the full article here.

The Majority Of Children Who Die From COVID-19 Are Children Of Color

Researchers analyzed the number of coronavirus cases and deaths among people under the age of 21 that were reported to the CDC between Feb. 12 and July 31 of this year. Of the children who died, 78% were children of color: 45% were Hispanic, 29% were Black and 4% were non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native. Schools That Are Mostly Black, Latino Favor Starting Online

National and state polls show that Black and Latino parents are more likely to be wary of returning to school in person than white parents. That likely reflects the disparate toll of the pandemic, with people from those communities dying at higher rates from COVID-19. Read the full story here.
