City Transitions Laura Evacuee Resource Center Management, Encourages Residents to Volunteer and Donate
The City of New Orleans encouraged residents to continue to provide donations and volunteer time to assist roughly 10,500 Hurricane Laura evacuees sheltering in New Orleans. Beginning last week, the administration of the Resource Center and donations management were transitioned to the United Way HandsOn Entergy Volunteer Center, a contractor of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Department Seeks Applications for Child and Adult Care Food Program Institutions
The Louisiana Department of Education's Division of Nutrition Support announced it is seeking applications from eligible institutions interested in administering the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a federally funded program that provides healthy, affordable meals to both children and adults. OPSB rolls forward property tax rate, adopts new process for charter approvals
The Orleans Parish School Board on Thursday approved a tax measure on its facilities fund property tax that will net an additional $1.7 million in revenues for capital repairs each year. Backpacks, masks and temperature checks: NOLA Public Schools’ youngest students return to the classroom
New Orleans public schools started virtually in August. But amid improving data on the city’s rate of infection, the NOLA Public Schools district allowed pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students back to campus this week. 'I'm Only 1 Person': Teachers Feel Torn Between Their Students And Their Own Kids
Over the summer, NPR and Ipsos surveyed a national sample of teachers, and found that about half had children under 18 at home. Of those, 57% agreed with the statement: "I cannot properly do my job from home while also taking care of my children." Read the full article here.

The Majority Of Children Who Die From COVID-19 Are Children Of Color
Researchers analyzed the number of coronavirus cases and deaths among people under the age of 21 that were reported to the CDC between Feb. 12 and July 31 of this year. Of the children who died, 78% were children of color: 45% were Hispanic, 29% were Black and 4% were non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native. Read the full story here.
