National Voices launches Annual Report
and search for new Chair of Trustees

Dear <<First Name>>,

We have just launched our Annual Report that officially covers the period up to 31 March 2020, but which can’t ignore the unprecedented health and care emergency that followed.

The working year saw National Voices shape a new strategy through a member engagement process and we moved towards working more clearly with rather than for members, and alongside people who live with ill health or impairment.

With the rise of COVID-19, National Voices stepped up, representing the insights of our member organisations into how people were affected, and we began working in more agile and accessible ways.

Please have a look at our Annual Report for more details of a challenging year but one we are proud to say saw National Voices once again develop its role in promoting person-centred care.

After six years Hilary Newiss is stepping down as Chair of National Voices – we thank her for her unstinting work and wish her all the best for the future. And this means that we are looking for a new Chair of Trustees to oversee the next part of the National Voices journey.

We have a lot of vital work coming out and are committed to keeping the inexcusable inequalities shaping people’s experiences of health front and centre in everything we do.

We are now looking for someone who can see the value of, and believes in, this work and who can help us move people, including those whose voices are often not heard, to a position of influence, as well as having a focus on broader policy.

If you feel you or someone you know would fit the bill, or you would like more information, please find the recruitment pack on our website.

The need for a strong voice for health and care charities has never been greater - it is going to be a challenging year but we are up for that challenge, and looking forward to doing this work together with our members and other partners.
best wishes

WHAT WE NEED NOW - New report launch

We have been listening to, capturing and learning from people’s experiences of health and care services during COVID and after the initial lockdown – and we have also co-produced recommendations from these for system leaders and deliverers.

It’s now time to share this important and powerful report – WHAT WE NEED NOW: What matters to people for health and care during COVID and beyond – new National Voices I Statements 2020 – to help shape services that are effective and fair for all.

Please join us if you can for the launch webinar on 6 October. It is now arguably more important than ever, as COVID infection rates rise again, that the system learns the lessons of the summer and we can help people get treatment and care they need and that is their right.

Outpatient Transformation Workstream at NHS England/Improvement

Arthritis Action and Parkinsons UK are representing National Voices and all our members at the Outpatient Transformation workstream at NHS England/ Improvement. Members who want to share some insight with our colleagues Laura or Noha can reach them through Laura Cockram. We can also discuss our representation at various boards and programmes at the next Heads of Policy meeting on 6 October at 2.30pm (see details below).
We would also like to remind you that we are representing you - our members - and the people you support, at a number of important boards:

  • We are members of the Primary Care Clinical Reference Group, run by Nikki Kanani and Ed Waller, NHS England – we spoke there about our work on digital and remote models of care.
  • The Elective Care Taskforce – reviewing where we have got to with Clinical Standards (waiting times, in normal speak) and how we can get specialist care going again.
  • On behalf of the Health and Wellbeing Alliance, we are leading the engagement on 111 First – which is a fundamental reconfiguration of urgent care in light of COVID-19 (to avoid overcrowding of A&E).
  • The Health Inequalities Task Force – where we will ensure that the commitments included in the Phase 3 letter to the NHS to take urgent action on inequalities will be implemented.

Rebecca Steinfeld, our Head of Policy, would love to hear from you if you have insights you want us to share at any of these boards.
