BrainsCAN celebrates four years of accomplishments

In 2016, Western received its largest research grant in the history of the institution to create BrainsCAN, an interdisciplinary initiative to push cognitive neuroscience research forward in new and progressive ways. Four years later, BrainsCAN is celebrating their anniversary with an interactive timeline that highlights the accomplishments they've achieved.

Please join us in congratulating the BrainsCAN team in their successes this month.

Updates from Human Ethics

What’s coming?

  • New Guidance Document for Remote Consent. With more researchers working off-site, we have seen an influx in protocols that propose obtaining informed consent remotely. There are several methods and ethical considerations when participants and researchers are not in the same location at the time consent is documented.  Please watch our website for this new guidance (which includes eConsent) in the coming weeks to assist you in designing your studies and amendments with best-practices in mind.
  • WREM Form Updates. Please ensure that for each study in WREM, the “Project Owner” is current. This individual will soon need to update the new and improved forms (when prompted) in order to have ongoing functionality in WREM. Read more about workshops and seminars.

Did you know?

  • Educational Sessions.  In addition to our online offerings, Ethics Officers will happily come to your class, department, or group to present on human research ethics in general or specific procedural details around REB applications at Western.  We will also work with you to develop customized content based on your needs.

WREM tip

  • Do you know the difference between assigning team member permissions as ‘Collaborators’ versus giving them a ‘Role’?  These are separate action tiles in WREM and serve very different functions.  Assigning someone to have access to, or receive notifications, using ‘Collaborators’ means that those parameters will apply only to the specific (single) form where you complete this action.  Using ‘Roles’ will assign permissions and notifications to the entire project and all sub-forms current and future. We recommend using ‘Roles’ in most cases.

The Tri-Agency wants your input

The three federal granting agencies are modernizing their grants management solution to better support applicants, research administrators and reviewers during the grants management lifecycle.

To that end, you are invited to complete a 15-minute change readiness survey (use Google Chrome to open survey), by October 14, 2020. By completing the survey, you will be helping shape how the Tri-Agency will manage, inform, and train users in the implementation of the new system.

Safeguarding your research

The Government of Canada fully supports open science as essential to advancing research and innovation. However, there is a growing awareness, domestically and internationally, of the potential for research, science, and innovation to be taken by opportunistic individuals looking to exploit research knowledge and innovation for their own benefit.

To help safeguard your research, the Government of Canada has released this quick guide [PDF], outlining the need, and the supports available to you, for safeguarding your academic research—both at home and abroad.

Reminder: mandatory human ethics training

All study team members, including faculty, librarians, archivists, students, postdoctoral scholars and staff listed on research proposals submitted to the human research ethics boards must provide evidence of completion of human research ethics training prior to beginning their research.

For more information regarding deadlines, how to complete training, how to upload certificates and answers to frequently asked questions please visit the Mandatory Training for Human Research section on our website.
