39th Ward Newsletter
September 28, 2020

Dear neighbor,

Since our last newsletter, the 39th Ward has seen an increase in gun violence. While the incidents appear to be targeted between known parties, the escalation is nonetheless unacceptable.

The safety and wellbeing of our community is my top priority. I am in constant communication with Mayor Lightfoot and her team. I spoke with the Mayor again last week, and she assured me our officers and specialized units will remain in their assigned districts. I speak with the 16th and 17th Police District Commanders and their teams daily. We have worked together to secure Specialized Units and more Rapid Response officers to include tactical and gang units in the Ward.

The City and County have also deployed additional street outreach and violence interrupter personnel across our neighborhoods to supplement Chicago's police resources. As part of the City's ongoing partnership with Metropolitan Family Services, the street outreach personnel will be out in full force working in collaboration with our residents and the City in order to build positive relationships with those who are at the highest risk.

Please join me on Wednesday, September 30th, at 6:00 p.m. for a virtual community safety discussion. I am hosting this conversation with the Chicago Police Department's 16th & 17th Districts, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, and representatives from the Mayor's Office for Public Safety. To attend this virtual meeting, please click here.

Your help in keeping our community safe is crucial. If you see something suspicious, please call 911 immediately.

Participatory Budgeting project idea-collection ends next Friday, October 2nd. If you have an infrastructure idea you would like to submit for review, please click here. Project ideas will be reviewed by the Participatory Budgeting Committee and placed on the community ballot. To learn more about the process, visit AldermanNugent.com.

The 39th Ward Public Service Office is open virtually from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is open for in-person service on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Scheduled appointments are preferred. Walk-ins are welcome using precautionary measures as recommended by the Chicago Department of Public Health. Masks are required, and social distancing guidelines will be followed.

As always, my office is here to help. Please reach out should you have any questions, comments, or concerns to Ward39@CityOfChicago.org or 773.736.5594.

I wish you good health and safety.

Alderman Samantha Nugent

Are You One of the 6,800 Households in the 39th Ward that Needs to Complete the Census?

This week, 87 households from the 39th Ward responded to the census. 70% of the Ward has responded. I would like to see 100% of our Ward respond so that we can be 100% funded.

Supervision During E-Learning Survey

With the start of the school year, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the City of Chicago are surveying families to better understand who may need help finding a safe space for their children during traditional school hours.

As CPS assesses parental needs throughout the city, they are evaluating opportunities to provide potential support with child supervision for families who have school-age children under 14 years of age.

While the priority deadline has passed, families are still encouraged to complete the survey.
