Luisa Fernanda is a romantic zarzuela (a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular songs, as well as dance) in three acts by Federico Moreno Torroba. The libretto, in Spanish, is by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández Shaw.

Luisa Fernanda is in many ways the last great romantic zarzuela. First seen at Madrid's Teatro Calderón on 26th March 1932, it owes something to the earlier masters of zarzuela grande (opera) and género chico (operetta), but its range and scale of emotion surpasses any of Torroba's models. Musically Luisa Fernanda embodies its composer's ideals of “El casticismo” - an attempt to foster the tradition of pure, popular nationalism. Torroba's music certainly offers colourful Spanish charm, as well as fair helpings of graceful Viennese musical comedy and Italian operatic verismo. His musical personality may be elusive, but Torroba's melodies are consistently memorable and his theatrical instinct never falters.

Pieter en die Wolf aangebied in Afrikaans. Prokofiev

Sat. 26 Sep 11:00
www.brooklyntheatre.tv

Ariel & Juana is an acoustic collaborative project between double bass player Ariel Zamonsky and vocalist Juana Pires Rafael. As a starting point for this project, the aim was to explore the musical connection between Africa and South America.

Being two Argentinians living abroad, they both felt the necessity to acknowledge their musical heritage and fusion it with the musical influences they've been exposed to throughout their careers, building a personal and relevant sound.

The producers of the very successful SOLD OUT “My Fair Lady 2019”, FULL HOUSE COMMUNITY THEATRE by arrangement with DALRO (Pty) Ltd. & Brooklyn Theatre presents Fiddler on the Roof - The Musical

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Launching 17 October
www.brooklyntheatre.tv

The Musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in or around 1905. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of their Jewish faith and heritage – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years. It won nine Tony Awards, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned five Broadway revivals and a highly successful 1971 film adaptation and has enjoyed enduring international popularity.

The musical includes very well-known musical numbers like “Tradition”, “Matchmaker”, If I were a rich man”, “To life”, Sunrise Sunset” and “Do you love me?”
