wow.

This is a big week around here in hi-fidelity land. So much amazing music, so much chaos du jour. In the midst of all this nothing speaks to how we feel about music and the American ethos more than the idea of 4 JOHN PRINE vintage classics being re-issued simultaneously with 4 brilliant early 70’s jazz rarities from the visionary BLACK JAZZ RECORDS label > (Check this video).
In just the same way the new things this week are a rainbow coalition of artists from RUN THE JEWELS, BRAD MEHLDAU, AVETT BROS, BUTCHER BROWN, and NEIL YOUNG all show we (they) are different yet (we) all have shared common concerns, anger and hopes for the world we are living in right now. Check some details on their new releases just below.

A word about Brad Mehldau (again):
just speaking personally (although I don’t’ think I’m alone in this) the music of Brad Mehldau is a cherished place of sanctuary, a safe and therapeutic place for me for many years now. In today's insanity realm this is true more than ever. I honestly believe his piano playing and composing is in the top select few of all pianist of all times. Period. Rejoice! I am so glad I am alive during the era while he works amongst us.
Find the music of Mehldau and huge amounts of other amazing things to listen to by visiting our unique Jazz and Classical room while you are here.

In this time of Covid-19 we thank you all so much for  shopping (with mask on) or hitting our webstore and ordering up at shop.horizonrecords.net and supporting us. We are grateful beyond words and continue striving to stock a ton of new and vintage music and get it to you guys everyday. Getting used to the current normal obviously hasn’t been easy, but music seems to make us each feel better whatever our preferred style, genre or format may be. We are here for ya, whether you are looking for Chamber music by Rimsky-Korsakov, a bit of John Prine therapy, some classic Notorious B.I.G. or a NEW RELEASE. VINYL or CD, new or used.

RUN THE JEWELS
RTJ4
ltd color 2LP, black 2LP vinyl & CD
buy it here!

Run the Jewels 4 bursts in with guns blazing as “Yankee and the Brave (Ep. 4)” sees Killer Mike taking on the role of an armed assailant trapped and surrounded by police and pondering who gets to have the kill shot. It's an appropriate beginning for RTJ4, an album of prickly, prescient conversations and explosive noise. El-P's verses complement Mike's bars with heady lines; more indirect but no less urgent over some of El-P's patented off kilter beats. The best songs call back to scabrous documents of the unrest of 1989 and 1990, like Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet, and to edgy political screeds drafted in the years since, like Dead Prez’s Let’s Get Free, the kind of music that used to get rappers in trouble with members of the government for incendiary logic. BRAD MEHLDAU
SUITE: APRIL 2020
Vinyl LP & CD
buy it here!

In typical Horizon fashion, we like to follow up some of our favorite rhyme-slayers with our main man solo piano slayer: Brad Mehldau. Although Mehldau is best known as a jazz composer and improviser, he is not afraid to step outside the genre for influence. His trio's early cover of Radiohead's Exit Music for a Film left many in polite society scratching there heads and wondering what is this, and who is this Radiohead?! Since then Mehldau has pushed the bounds of his legendary piano trio, explored the endless possibilities of solo piano (Kieth Jarrett styled improvisation to the keyboard classics of Bach) as well as chamber orchestras, duos, jazz fusion, pretty much you name it! But the constant in all these endeavors is the creative energy and technical execution of his playing. Mehldau is and always will be a piano giant.

JOHN COLTRANE
Giant Steps
60th Anniv Vinyl LP & CD editions
buy it here!

I'm guessing there's a good chance that if you are reading this you know and love this record. It's essentially the record that destroyed be-bop. The chord progressions are moving so quickly that Tommy Flanagan (piano) bless his heart is hanging on for dear life as Trane comfortably blows blistering leads taking Charlie Parker styled chops to new harmonic depths. After Trane made this record, he was done with the be-bop styled sheets of sound, and was on to work briefly in Monk's group and Miles' group then to his own classic quartet in 1961 where he pushed jazz off a cliff; leading the way to spiritual, avant-guarde, free and atonal skronk till his untimely death in 1967. I cheresh the whole Coltrane catalog but I implore you, if you don't have a copy of Giant Steps, RUN don't walk to your nearest record shop and correct that oversight.

BUTCHER BROWN
#KingButch
Vinyl LP & CD
buy it here!

#KingButch—hashtag proudly attached—is the title of Butcher Brown’s tenth album in the band’s up-from-the-roots legacy, and their first with Concord Records. The 13 tracks collectively represent a bold step forward for the 5-piece group from Richmond, Virginia. Remaining true to the group’s heady fusion of contemporary hip-hop, ‘70s fusion, ‘60s jazz and funk—even echoes of Southern rock and marching band music show up—#KingButch is a powerfully original statement that reaches across divisions of genre, generation, ethnicity, and geography. Significantly, the new recording also reveals a side of Butcher Brown that’s been developing and is now in full-flower: a song-crafting, studio maturity on a par with their national reputation as an explosive live act.

The Waterfall II completes, My Morning Jacket’s acclaimed 2015 record. Originally intended to be a sprawling triple album, the band were advised to hold back and keep some of it on the shelf. Until now! Frontman Jim James says, "this is simply the second half of a long snapshot of life for me as a writer in the years leading up to 2014, and the life of us as a band as we lived and worked in the epic country in and around Stinson Beach, CA during these recording sessions."

H.C. McEntire
Eno Axis
ltd swirl color vinyl LP & CD
buy it here!

Narratively, H.C. McEntire’s Eno Axis is about finding direction in the natural world, and following love. The songs are inspired by the colors and tones of open tunings, by the sacrality of space and instinct. Stylistically, it’s folk-rock leaning into its curious experimental side and moved by the spiritual rawness of classic soul and the simplicity of earnest pop.
