Dr. H. Bernard Hall, Assistant Professor of Urban Teacher Education at Drexel University School of Education, will lead this virtual book study guiding educators through Steven Goodman's "It's Not About Grit: Trauma, Inequity, and the Power of Transformative Teaching." Through this professional learning experience, participants will deepen their understanding of supporting our youth and gain a full understanding of the mythology of "grit." 

The three discussion sessions focus on: 
  • Micro-level trauma and macro-level structural and institutional inequity 
  • Transformative pedagogy
  • Informative case studies
  • The links that exist between race, poverty and academic achievement
  • Moving from trauma and resilience towards student activism

Dr. H. Bernard Hall is Assistant Professor of Urban Teacher Education at Drexel University. His teaching and research interests include urban teacher education and development for social justice, secondary English education and hip-hop pedagogy. Dr. Hall has facilitated numerous professional development workshops on anti-racism, diversity and inclusion in public and independent schools across the Delaware Valley.  He lives in Ardmore, PA with his wife, Naté, and sons, Noah and Braden.
