Dear Maynard Family,
This is Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds, co-executive directors of the Maynard Institute. We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new website! Mije.org now reflects the mission and bright future of the institute. We hope to continue providing resources and information on dismantling systemic racism and building institutions of belonging in news media.
Next week, we will be hosting two valuable sessions at the IRE virtual conference including a conversation with journalists in ethnic media and a Maynard Institute Fault Lines training. To participate in these discussions, you will have to be an IRE member and register for their conference so we have instructions linked for that below.
Stay positive. Test negative.
The Maynard Institute is the nation’s oldest organization dedicated to helping news media accurately portray all segments of society, particularly those often overlooked. Warning that tackling newsroom diversity by starting at the bottom can look like 'window dressing'
By Charlotte Tobitt
UK-based news site, Press Gazette, published a recap of ‘Decolonising News: Confronting journalism’s role in systemic racism,’ a widely-watched digital event hosted by European outlet, The Bureau of Investigation. The summary highlighted Maynard co-executive director Martin Reynold’s emphasis on substantive change at the executive levels in news organizations, as opposed to “performative diversity” hiring.
