POAA Gives Meaning to the Motto: "In Business For Yourself, Not By Yourself."
CONSTITUTION DAY
Today, September 17th, is the federal observance of Constitution Day, a holiday to honor the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. In many respects, the genius of our Constitution is not only that the government formed by “We the People” was such a radical departure from the absolutism of the Divine Right doctrine that prevailed at the time, but also that it recognIzed a government “Of the People, By the People and For the People” must heed a harsh reality of human nature - people pursue their own self-interests and often characterize what is best for them as being best for all. Our founders clearly ascribed to Lord Acton’sobservation that “All power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely” - so they purposefully designed our democratic republic to prevent future officials from abusing their power.
LESSONS LEARNED
A lesson learned from Constitution Day is that our drafters invented the framework for a completely unique form of government rooted in the cold-eyed acceptance of people as they really are - not what we want them to be. Our founders did not try to create a utopia because history already taught them that people in positions of power promote their own interests over the interests of others, and no form of government can eliminate all bad behavior and even honest errors of human judgment. The framers stared straight into the teeth of the problem and created a system of governance that spread power around so the few could not oppress the many, and the many could not oppress the few. Our Constitution abolished absolutism because our founders revolted against the practice of unlimited centralized authority vested in a monarch or the privileged few.
TeamPOAA is inspired by Constitution Day because it encourages us to reflect on the wisdom of our founders. Every owner should be disgusted by the notion of absolute power, and recognize that people in positions of power, like CPB and PF executives, will promote their own interests over ours. It explains a lot, especially the most obvious unfair of polices and practices raised in POAA newsletters.
The next POAA Zoom Meeting will begin at 7pm EST on Tuesday, September 29th.
