9.29 Meet State Mandate for Employee Training:
Recognition & Prevention of Sexual Harassment

For supervisors and employees. This training exceeds Illinois' standard to train all employees about sexual harassment by 12.31.20.

Recognition, Reporting, and Prevention of Sexual Harassment

Presenter: Samuel J. Castree, Jr.
Cost per person: $20 NICNE Member / $25 General Admission
Date: Tuesday, September 29
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. via Zoom

This interactive training session will address Illinois mandated topics for all employees, and also includes a special focus on the duties and responsibilities of supervisors in this process. This training is appropriate for all employees, supervisors and HR staff.

Attend this training to comply with state law and learn important information about sexual harassment. Note: Companies are now required to provide annual workplace training on how to recognize and prevent sexual harassment or face hefty fines under a new state law (SB 75) that took effect on January 1. The mandate is part of an omnibus bill called the Workplace Transparency Act, which Illinois lawmakers passed in response to the growing number of sexual misconduct allegations being made in a variety of industries.

Presenter Samuel J. Castree, Jr. is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Staff Management, Inc., a human resource management consulting and outsourcing firm. Learn more about the training and presenter by clicking the link below.

9.25 Exchange on Innovation: COVID Edition

September's session will focus on COVID pivots, and how these have led to new or innovative organizational practices.

Come prepared to discuss and share your experiences in relation to the following questions; Think in terms of your own personal approach and your professional or organizational approach to these issues:

1. Think of one area or topic that you approach in a markedly different way since the onset of COVID; What have you started doing differently, and how have you and your organizations’ views changed about this area or topic over the past 4 months?

2. Given the lessons that COVID has taught and is teaching us, what activities have you prioritized to help achieve excellence or sustain your organization?

We will then engage in an activity to examine our collective experiences and use them to define a tangible problem, and explore what additional resources may be needed to build a workable solution or idea.

Innovation is more relevant today than ever before. NICNE’s Executive Exchange on Innovation helps area leaders network and share information, learn new ideas and approaches to solve complex issues, and foster a culture of sustained innovation in their organization. Join NICNE and other nonprofit leaders to learn about what it takes to build and strengthen an innovative organization—to achieve breakthroughs, consider new approaches and ideas, and move a concept from idea to implementation.

Exchange Facilitator Aparna Saligrama, PhD, recently joined the NICNE team contributing a wealth of knowledge and experience about using design thinking and social innovation.

Dr. Saligrama is a social innovation researcher and consultant who works to help clients understand and incorporate socially innovative approaches into everything that they do. She works on a broad range of issues; from creating new socially innovative approaches for existing products or service lines, designing new ventures, setting up new companies, to creating intra-organizational readiness for innovation. She also works with clients to develop innovative approaches for internal processes, builds content and messaging, creates metrics and designs impact assessments based on client need and industry-type, and creates systems maps to understand problems and to identify impact gaps. October 7 Session Details: Turning The Titanic: An Organizational Change Story, Rob Pabon, Associate Director of Civic & Community Relations, Chicago Cares.

Ellen Ray and Rob Pabon will share the compelling story of how a dynamic leadership team completely reoriented an established, conservative, yet outmoded institution into a thriving, cutting-edge, emergent player in the social impact sector. Founded in 1991, Chicago Cares has been the city’s premier engine for volunteer mobilization for nearly 30 years. The organization has a $4 million budget, nearly 40 employees and mobilizes 20,000 volunteers annually.

Starting in 2016, Chicago Cares found itself in the midst of sector and cultural changes that it was unprepared for. The social impact sector was focusing more on outcomes over outputs, and both foundation and corporate donors were reducing their support due to the organization’s inability to articulate impact effectively. Isolated acts of interpersonal generosity were no longer sufficient as the sector sought to move the needle on large, intractable social problems like violence and poverty.

National movements like Black Lives Matter were also changing Chicago’s narrative around equity, forcing the city and its institutions to grapple with our long history of racial, economic and social segregation. Addressing systemic inequity requires everyone stepping into the part they can play – including organizations like Chicago Cares. In this changing landscape, Chicago Cares found itself passé and anxious, with diminishing relevance to the city’s social impact landscape and change efforts. Together with a committed Board of Directors, Chicago Cares’ executive team realized quickly that what the organization needed was to be dynamic and adaptive – not comfortable and stable. This moment in time required a new leadership strategy focused on innovation, strategy and change management.

What has transpired since is an inspiring story of intentional, and sometimes painful, organizational change, complete with the associated risks, rewards, pitfalls and victories. Chicago Cares’ story (what we affectionately call “turning the Titanic”) is an important case study for nonprofits across the country who are facing changing political and funding landscapes while grappling with their own future relevance. Organizations – even 30-year-old, well-established, and well-funded organizations – can pivot when necessary to become the dynamic, adaptive organizations that our cities and country need.

Rob Pabon is an accomplished community advocate and social impact leader who has dedicated his life and career to creating opportunities for marginalized populations. As the Associate Director of Civic & Community Relations for Chicago Cares he has successfully implemented a community investment strategy and developed opportunities for volunteers to take civic action.

These discussions and post-session activities will help you apply the information presented towards your work, and offer you the opportunity to engage in deep discussion with other attendees to help you to strengthen your personal and professional network.
