This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.
The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

20 September, from NSW Police Force
A man has been charged following a serious crash in Sydney’s north west earlier this year.
About 12.10am on Sunday 5 April 2020, a Mazda 626 was travelling west on Sermelfi Drive, Glenorie, when it left the road and struck a power pole.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, was taken to Westmead Hospital with minor injuries. He also underwent mandatory testing.
His passenger, a 16-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition. He has since been released.
Officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Following inquiries, the driver, now aged 21, was issued a Court Attendance Notice about 1.30pm yesterday (Friday 18 September 2020) for the offences of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm- drive manner dangerous, drive with low range PCA, negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm), and not comply with noticed direction re section 7/8/9 – COVID-19.
He is due to appear at Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday 3 November 2020.

Average speed cameras are being installed on motorways and in tunnels across Sydney in response to the increase in heavy vehicles travelling through the city.
Where average speed cameras are already operating in NSW, there’s been a 44% reduction in fatalities from crashes involving heavy vehicles – compared to the 5 years before the cameras’ installation.

There isn’t a week that goes by without somebody wanting to organise a rally or protest of some sort. Whether it be about something close to their heart or taking up someone else’s ‘battle’ police have to be on their toes, ensuring the rights and safety of all.
Well, a protest about ‘Fairy bread’ is to take place this weekend in Hornsby. But don’t worry, we have it under control even though hundreds and thousands are expected to attend.

Missing Person - Karina Tomsia
Police are appealing for public assistance to find a female missing from Sydney’s east.
Karina Tomsia, aged 38, was last seen in the Bondi area in 2018.
Officers from Hornsby Police Area Command were notified by a relative after it was revealed that the Missing person closed/discontinued all social media in 2017.
Karina is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 165 - 175cm tall, 60 – 70kg, with blonde hair, blue/grey eyes and a fair complexion.
Karina previously resided in the Hornsby and Bondi areas.

Your local Police, Multicultural and Aboriginal liaison officers are working together to get the message out, and we need your help.
Wash your hands regularly, keep at least 1.5 metres away from others and get tested if you feel unwell.

Most crime is opportunistic. A thief sees a chance and takes it. And the changes to our lifestyles caused by the COVID 19 pandemic have created new opportunities for the opportunistic thief.
As we move our regular shopping to online, we have in turn increased the risk of our property being stolen – before we even have a chance to unwrap the parcel.
The Daily Mail reported in March this year that 1 in 4 parcels were stolen in Australia in 2019 and it was anticipated that this would increase by 20% in 2020. This prediction was prior to the huge boom in online shopping that we are experiencing due to the COVID 19 restrictions.
Australia Post reported over 1 million parcels were stolen last year and that is only going to rise.

Someone came into the backyard of our newly purchased home, ripped out 8 hedge plants, took 7, left one on the ground, also emptied out and took 2 large expensive pots. Presumably put the 7 plants in the pots and walked away with them all.
On Nelson street. I thought it was a safe neighbourhood. It’s shocking & disheartening.
Please be careful, watchful and watch out for your neighbours' houses too.

Increasingly, we're hearing of pedestrians heading to or from refuge islands in the middle of roads expecting cars to stop.
A pedestrian refuge is not a designated crossing.
They're on busy or wide roads to help pedestrians, particularly young people and the elderly, cross in two, safer stages.
Pedestrians, and particularly young people, should not expect drivers to stop as they approach a refuge, unless there's also a marked crossing on the road.
Drivers should always be alert to pedestrians on our roads.

When Ann Miles received a call telling her that her bank account had been scammed, she was alarmed. The caller had her account details and claimed to be from the St George Bank fraud team.
When she questioned his legitimacy, he gave her a number to call back on "and the girl said to me 'St George bank fraud section can I help you?' It was how a business should operate."
The scammer told Ms Miles they needed her to play a role in an AFP operation to catch a network of scam artists.

Gordon Neighbourhood Watch Area 24/12 had a Committee meeting for two reasons; to merge the bank balance from the East Killara Neighbourhood Watch Area 25/26 into the Gordon Area 24/12 account, and to discuss the upcoming AGM scheduled for Tuesday 24 November 2020 in relation to the Covid pandemic restrictions. Here are the Summary Notes from that meeting.
The outcome of the discussions on the AGM was that the meeting would be held online instead of people meeting in person at the Gordon Library. The date and time remain the same: 7pm Tuesday 24 November 2020. More about the meeting to follow nearer the time.
Gordon hold the money that finances the website for NHW in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby. Julia (Gordon Area 24 Coordinator & Coordinator for NHW in K-ring-gai & Hornsby) requested payment for the annual fees for hosting and domain name charges. Because the 26 November 2019 AGM had been postponed due to the mini tornado, and then the new 31 March 2020 date failed due to Covid, the amount owed to Julia was building up! All of this information will be declared openly and transparently at the online AGM. We hope to see you there

East Killara Neighbourhood Watch Area 25/26 had a committee meeting to pass the motion that merged their bank account with that of Gordon Area 24/12. If you remember, we already share AGM/gettogether meetings with Gordon, as well as newsletters. The bank balance was approximately $462. This will be confirmed at the next combined AGM scheduled for 7pm on Tuesday 24 November 2020 via an online Zoom meeting. More about the meeting nearer the time.
