Don't Compare Yourself to Others
September 18, 2020
"Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won't need to compare yourself to anyone else."
Galatians 6:4
Let me make this short and sweet:
Don't compare yourself to other people. It's dangerous. It's useless. It's ungodly

The family you're born into, the places you've lived, your birth order, and every other aspect of who you are have been specifically selected by God to fulfill his purpose in your life. Psalm 139:16 says, "You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."

Many people shift their identity and self-worth based upon the environment. In one room, they feel beautiful and smart. In another room, they feel ugly and intimidated. That's ludicrous! The way you feel about yourself should be based upon who God says you are.  Uh...hello... fearfully made.

You know, you should repent every time you criticize yourself because you're really saying that God didn't do a good job with you. Again, ludicrous! God doesn't make mistakes. He is not flawed so neither are you. #preachingtomyself

We've all been given different gifts and it's nonsensical to compare yourself with people who are gifted differently that you. The entire premise of my book "Stay in your Lane" is that we are all created by God for a purpose. Our personality traits and skills play well when we are aligned with God's purpose for our lives. When we are misaligned, who we are doesn't fit our environment so we call it "failure," "weakness," or "flaws".

We're all created equally in the image of God but the minute we're born that changes. Nobody is BETTER THAN anybody else. Some people are BETTER OFF than others. At any given moment of your life you are worse off or better off than somebody else.  So, what's the sense in comparisons? For better of worse...We are born into the exact family and circumstances for us to be who God created us to be. The sooner you embrace this concept, the sooner you can make peace with your past, your people, and your pain.

Does comparing yourself to others boost your esteem? Does it make you feel bad about who you are? Does it make you feel better? Happy? Sad? Proud?

What exactly are you looking for when you compare yourself to others?

It's hard not to compare ourselves to others when we live in world with "best of" lists, awards, honors, incentive plans, and social media "my life is better than yours" campaigns. Let me give you at tip... You can only compare yourself to other people if you take the time to examine their lives.  So...

Take the advice in Galatians 6:4.  Mind Your Business!  When you get busy being the best version of yourself, you won't have the time or desire to compare yourself to others.

Amen Paul! Amen Brother!
Many people get frustrated with all this purpose talk. They tried it and it didn't work. After changing cities, jobs, or even spouses, they find themselves in the same old rut. They start to believe that life is meaningless and we're just here to work, live, and have a few good times in between.

No! There is more to life than that.

Purpose, contentment, and satisfaction is found at the intersection of what you love and what you're really good at...that's your lane. That's where you can live.
