5 Years of the Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the 'Global Goals' were agreed by world leaders and adopted by all 193 Members States of the UN in 2015, and this year's Global Goals Week, 18 - 26 September marks the SDGs 5th anniversary.
Global Goals Week seeks to bring people together from leaders to citizens in order to accelerate progress towards the 17 goals as COVID-19 threatens to reverse decades of progress.
The London Sustainable Development Commission, established in 2002 to advise the Mayor on making London a global leader on sustainability, have recently published a paper that positions the SDGs as having a crucial role to play in London's green and fair recovery, explaining how the SDG framework can help to deliver a sustainable recovery to ensure 'no one is left behind'.
The 17 goals have the power to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change.
After 5 years, the world is not on track to deliver the SDGs and COVID-19 places additional pressure on meeting the goals, but has however sparked a renewed debate around building back greener. It is therefore crucial that the economic recovery does not just rebuild existing systems that drive inequality and environmental degradation, but instead creates a greener, fairer and more resilient society. The Decade of Action calls for accelerating sustainable solutions to all the world's biggest challenges by 2030. Wwhen tailored to London's local context, the SDGs can help decision makers deliver myriad co-benefits when planning the COVID-19 recovery.
