October 2020

We just completed a virtual wine tasting with our friends from Kermit Lynch Importers, purveyors of some of the finest wines from France and Italy. The tasting was a big hit and we were able to get our hands on some hard to find wines from KL. In the month of October we will be featuring various wines from Kermit Lynch. Look for these wines on our shelves and our online store throughout the month of October!

Blinders Event With SommTV and Brandon Wise

We will be hosting a virtual event with the creators of SommTV centered around their wine tasting game, Blinders! We will also be joined by local artist Brandon Wise, who created the art for the game as well as many of SommTV's documentaries. You can pick up a deck of these cards at our store, or order them through our online store. We'll ship them anywhere in the country if you'd like to tune in from out of town! Be on the lookout for a link to join the event as we get closer to the date!

Le Marquis de Calon Sègur 2016
55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon
Bordeaux, France

One of my fondest wine memories is spending time in Bordeaux France in the 90’s when Susan and I were just getting into wines. We found an affordable room at a B&B in Saint Estéphe, a sun drenched tiny town in the northern part of the left bank. The climate and soil in Saint Estéphe produces wonderful, massive red blends that we still love to this day. If you have not been there, put Saint Estéphe on your list of must places to visit. In the meantime, grab some cheese, a baguette and this wonderful bottle of wine to enjoy with your favorite person. You’ll feel like you’re in the south of France! -Adam

House Of Brown
100% Chardonnay
Sonoma, California

Im a love it or hate it kind of person when it comes to Chardonnay. I tend to lean more towards Chablis than say a domestic Chardonnay. This wine spoke to me like few domestic chardonnays do.  Bright flavors of tropical fruit, lemon, guava mix well with good acidity and a bit of salinity on the finish. This un-oaked Chardonnay from the Brown Estate family in California is produced exclusively by female wine makers. A great wine for a night at home. You'll notice some Na*Kyrsie Summer Sausage in the picture. This is because its the perfect table wine to enjoy with a cheese, charcuterie and salty snacks. Enjoy the cool weather and sip some on the porch swing or put on your favorite movie and sink into the couch. - Elan

Bell's Brewing
Best Brown
American Brown Ale

5.8% ABV

Sometimes simple is best. There are no toasted marshmallows or Sumatran coffee beans or slices of boysenberry cheesecake in this beer. It's not brewed with rare herbs or hops that are so new they are named only by a number. It is not dry hopped even once, let alone double, and in the glass, although mahogany in color, it is beautifully crystal clear. What it is is superbly brewed beer. Light enough to drink whilst catching the last warm rays of the summer. Robust enough to accompany brisk fall evenings. It's malty with notes of toast, caramel, and cocoa but finishes dry and snappy like crisp, crumbling oak leaves underfoot. There is nothing fancy about this beer yet it my absolute favorite fall seasonal. Like a perfectly sliced piece of raw tuna perched atop a pillow of rice or an Opinel no. 8 carbone folding knife, it is a master class in simplicity and elegance; it is greater than the sum of it's parts. Pick up a 6 or 12 pack now because before long cinnamon and honey infused holiday brews will flood our shelves with sticky, cheery ponderousness and you will long for something simple. -Abie

The Pinot Project
100% Pinot Noir
North Coast, California

This was the red wine option at my sister's wedding this past weekend! I hadn't tried in a while, but it was a solid Pinot Noir. I like light-bodied reds no matter the season, but they're especially delicious this time of year. 2020 has left me with a tighter wine budget, so finding a good Pinot Noir without spending a lot of money definitely is a plus. Lots of fresh black fruit notes and some hints of spice. -Sarah

Wild Hog
100% Zinfandel
Lake County, California

This is a bottle my mother and I have bonded over. I was just starting out at Wine Spot and I brought this home over Christmas and she loved this bottle so it always reminds me of that time. It’s bold, juicy, a good amount of pepper, and just makes me feel right at home. -Claire

Columbus Brewing
Festbier
Oktoberfest Style Lager

5.3% ABV

Traditionally built on lager or marzen (which is also lager), the Oc(k)toberfest or Festbier category contains a surprising degree of variation for a style with such specific temporal underpinnings–that fleeting summer-fall transition when the days stay warm and clear but the nights get cool and crispy, which is the actual most wonderful time of the year and incidentally the only time lederhosen is both seasonally appropriate and meteorologically practical–but is always characterized by its caramel-amber hue and round-but-not-indulgent nutty malt flavors. Columbus Festbier is a refreshing (literally) take on this timeless style, and manages to pack in all that classic Oc(k)tober-y goodness while remaining unusually light and delectable, so you can g’suffa all you want without feeling like absolute scheiße the next day. Or just have one or two. It’s good that way too. -Zach
