Dane County Extension Happenings
September 2020
As summer comes to an end and we move in to fall, the weather and our daily activities are changing. We are thinking about harvest, kids back in school either virtually or in person, and making plans for the winter. Your Dane County Extension Educators are also staying busy providing virtual programming and developing new resources to help meet the needs of individuals, families, 4-H clubs, schools, farms, businesses and communities. This newsletter highlights just a few of the programs and resources available from Extension. Please check our website often for the latest on program updates and new resources.

                                                                                                                    Be well,

Voter Registration & Get Out the Vote: How to help your organization’s members, supporters, and clients register to vote

Thursday, Sept. 24, 12:00 – 1:15 pm.
Free, but registration is required. Register HERE (we'll send you a Zoom link after you register).

Since when is getting out the vote a part of your mission? If you care about democracy, public engagement, and promoting leadership for your cause, then assisting your organization’s members, supporters, and clients with voter registration IS and should be an action strategy aligned with mission.

Join us for this peer learning session led by Melissa Kono, Extension Community Development Educator for Clark & Trempeleau Counties and Town Clerk for the Town of Burnside, to learn the basics of registering to vote in Wisconsin. Melissa will provide an in-depth discussion of MyVote.com, and clarify documentation needed to register and to vote absentee. Melissa will be joined by Anne Katz, Executive Director of Arts Wisconsin, who will introduce the Wisconsin ArtsVote Pledge, a campaign to encourage people in Wisconsin who care about the arts to commit to voting and to encouraging others to vote. We hope participants will share their own voter education campaigns and engage in discussion about creative ways to engage organization members around voting.

Tips for Building a Stronger Board
Thursday, Oct. 22, 12:00 – 1:00 pm.
Free, but registration is required. Register HERE (we'll send you a Zoom link after you register).

This peer learning pop-up session is focused on discussion about elements of a high functioning board of directors. Learn about legal requirements and best practices for boards. Registered non-profit organizations are required to have a governance board; as such, the State of Wisconsin has specified  legal requirements and duties for board members. This session will highlight board member roles & responsibilities, effective board meeting practices, and tools for high functioning boards.

Join us for this peer learning session led by Paul Roback, Professor & Community Development Educator for Washington County Extension. Paul will provide essential information about boards first, and then we'll engage in conversation and learning from each other about how you work with and strengthen your own board. We’ll introduce questions regarding board diversity, community leadership, and building leadership capacity on the board. This session is recommended for non-profit staff and board members.

National Farm Safety & Health Week 2020: Every Farmer Counts
September 20-26, 2020

For more than 75 years, the U.S. has observed National Farm Safety and Health Week by Presidential Proclamation. President Roosevelt signed the first observance in 1944 in the middle of World War II, noting the importance of American farmers and ranchers to both the war efforts and as important partners in national and global peace and prosperity.

Now, in 2020, in the midst of global pandemic, we continue to recognize the important contribution of the agricultural industry and the men and women who work hard as farm owners and operators, family members, and hired full-time, part-time and seasonal employees producing the food that feeds a growing world population.

Safe Preserving Tips in the time of COVID-19

Whether you are new to canning, returning to canning because of the pandemic, or have always canned the bounty of your harvest, there are certain tips that will help ensure that your time and efforts lead to safe, healthy food for your family.

Use recipes that are up to date. Some canning recommendations have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. While capturing a family-favorite memory might be your goal, recipes from cookbooks and the internet are generally not tested to ensure safety. Especially if you are using recipes that date before 2015, it’s a good idea to compare your home recipe with research-tested recipes, choosing a tested recipe to ensure your efforts are safe and delicious. The good news is that all research-tested recipes are available for free from the National Center for Home Food Preservation: https://nchfp.uga.edu  Recipes for canning vegetables or tomatoes, fruits, meats or even fermenting sauerkraut or making genuine crock pickles are all available.
