Stéphanie BuelensAn Inconvenient Woman, the inaugural title from our new Scarlet imprint, just got a wonderful review from mystery expert Marilyn Stasio at the New York Times! Here’s what she had to say:

“My idea of a good psychological suspense story is one that messes with your head. No cheap thrills, just lots of disorienting plot twists that have you doubting your own mental faculties. AN INCONVENIENT WOMAN, a remarkably polished first mystery by Stéphanie Buelens, succeeds at these mind games with a taut plot.”

Puppies
by Maurizio De Giovanni

After his wife up and left him, Warrant Officer Francesco Romano has lost the ability to sleep just when he needed it the most, for he’s trying to forget the scene which ended with him losing control and striking Giorgia right across the face. So he was on his way to the Pizzofalcone Station much earlier in the morning than usual, lamenting the litter-strewn streets. What a mess! There was the rusty guts of a motor scooter, a broken doll, assorted plastic detritus and all manner of urban junk. Then the broken doll started crying.

In Maurizio De Giovanni’s excellent series, the so-called ‘Bastards Of Pizzofalcone’ are the Neapolitan cops who can be sacrificed to this backwater precinct after having run afoul of the department brass, or in some cases of the law itself. Pizzofalcone station is itself earmarked for elimination, but once a days-old baby is discovered abandoned in the trash, the ‘bastards’ see an opportunity to show what they can really do. Which in practice means painstakingly piecing together clues. The baby is very ill, but is clean and dressed in expensive infant wear--what does that mean? The local priest had received an odd confession of sorts from a young woman the day before which may be related; since the baby is so young, it must have been left by the mother who must live close by. Right? But why? One theory is that someone is forcing the new mother to lose the kid at the risk of her own life. But no one could be that cruel. Right? Then, another murder--a Ukranian housekeeper with a violent husband. And the stray animals of the neighborhood keep disappearing. Could these facts possibly be related to the abandoned child? One way to find out! Unsigned Paperback. $18.00

In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and in front of everybody shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird. McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood's Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself. One of the apparent victims is Nelson Kerr, an author of thrillers. But the nature of Nelson’s injuries suggests that the storm wasn’t the cause of his death: He has suffered several suspicious blows to the head. Who would want Nelson dead? This week we received signed copies of Death in Her Hands, the latest novel from Ottessa Moshfegh. While on her daily walk with her dog in a secluded woods, a woman comes across a note, handwritten and carefully pinned to the ground by stones. "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body." But there is no dead body. Becoming obsessed with solving this mystery, our narrator imagines who Magda was and how she met her fate. A triumphant blend of horror, suspense, and pitch-black comedy, Death in Her Hands asks us to consider how the stories we tell ourselves both reflect the truth and keep us blind to it. Once again, we are in the hands of a narrator whose unreliability is well earned, and the stakes have never been higher. Signed on a Tip-In Page. $27.00

Sue, Eugene, The Mysteries of Paris, London, Chapman & Hall, 1845. First authorized English edition, 3 volumes. Previously published in 90 parts by a pirate publishing company. A near fine set in the original cloth, with only trivial wear to the spine tips and corners. This early episodic crime novel was first published in parts and was wildly popular, so the first book edition had a substantial print run. It is not an uncommon but is rare in the original cloth, as all copies seen in recent years have been rebound. The volumes are very large and heavy but all hinges are intact. Volume 3 has an 1846 date on the title page so may be a later issue, though there are no indications of a reprint. Among the reasons it is among the most important books in the development of the mystery genre is its introduction of an “almost” detective, Rodolphe, the Prince of Gerolstein who, in disguise, roams the slums near Notre Dame, solving crimes and righting wrongs with his immense physical strength, wealth, and intelligence, taking down a serial killer with a mutilated face. As announced on several occasions, we have discontinued our monthly Newsletter as it has become too unwieldy. A Sherlock Holmes list will be featured towards the end of each Update, listing new titles and a selection of backlist titles, out-of-print, rare, and unusual items. The same number of Sherlockian titles featured in the Newsletter will be offered every month in the Updates, just not all at once. Please let me know if you have questions.
